لعمريby my life لقدْindeed قاسيتُI endured بالفقرthrough poverty شدةhardship
وَقعتُI fell بِهَاbecause of it فِيinto حَيْرةbewilderment وَشَتاتand disarray
By my life, I have indeed endured hardship through poverty;
By my life, I have suffered greatly from poverty
Because of it, I fell into bewilderment and disarray.
It has cast me into confusion and dispersion
فإنْfor if بحتُI spoke openly بالشكوىin complaint هتكتُI violated مروءَتيmy honor
وإِنْand if لنwill not أبحْI speak out بالصَّبْرthrough patient endurance خفْتُI feared مَمَاتيmy death
For if I voice my complaint, I violate my honor;
If I complain, I dishonor my dignity
And if I do not speak out, I fear that patient endurance will be my death.
If I don’t complain patiently, I fear my death
فأعظِمْso how grievous بِهِit is مِنْas نَازلa visitor بِمُلِمَّةwith a calamity
يُزيلُit removes حَيائيmy modesty أَوْor يُزيلُit removes حَيَاتيmy life
So how grievous a visitor it is, bringing calamity:
So grant me from ordeals that which
It takes away my modesty, or it takes away my life.
Removes my bashfulness or removes my life
