Cheer me, and cheer my two companions,

And give me my fill of clarified wine.

Indeed, among us are singing girls who play the tambourine

For our young men, and a life of ease.

They vie in luxury and pour

    Fragrant musk among their braids.

Their only concern is to adorn themselves with necklaces

Of coral strands interspersed with gold beads—

    How splendid their ornaments are!

And a young man who strikes the battalion with a sword

When swords have become mere sticks.

    إِنَّ فينا بها فتىً خزرجيّا

    Indeed, we find no joy anywhere but Najd;

Indeed, there among us is a Khazraji youth.

    فَتَجافي عنه لنا يامَنيّا

    He wards off humiliation and injustice from himself;

So keep away from him for our sake, Yemeni.

Tell al-Harith ibn Zalim, the coward,

And Ali, the maker of vows:

You kill only sleepers, but never

    An alert, armed warrior.

With me is my battle gear: broad arrowheads like embers,

And I have readied a keen Mashrafi blade.

If you descended into the land, I would make you forget

Killing, as the intercalator postpones the deferred month.
