روحيmy soul فِداكَa ransom for you عرَفْتَyou know أمَor لمnot تَعْرِفِyou know
My heart tells me that you will destroy me.
My heart whispers that you are my darling
My soul is your ransom, whether you know it or not.
My soul is yours, did you know or were you unaware?
لمnot أَقْضِI fulfill حَقّthe due of هَواكَlove for you إنif كُنتُI am الذيthe one who

لمnot أقضِI perish فيِهin it أسىًof grief ومِثليَand one like me مَنْone who يَفيkeeps faith
I have not paid love's due to you, if I am one
I have not fulfilled your love if I was the one
Who has not died of grief in it; one like me keeps faith.
Who did not suffer in it, and who like me would fulfill?
ماnothing ليI have سِوَىexcept روحيmy soul وباذِلُand one who offers نفسِهِhis soul

I have nothing but my soul; one who offers his soul
I have nothing but my soul that I sacrifice
In love for the one he loves is not extravagant.
For the love of the one I adore, I am no spendthrift

If you are pleased with it, you have granted my wish;
So if you are pleased with it, you have aided me
Alas for the failed endeavor if you do not help!
Oh what disappointment if you do not aid

Oh you who deprive me of the sweetness of sleep
The robe of sickness in its stead, and of my consuming passion,
And grant me the garment of sickness through agony and grief

Have pity on my last spark of life and what you have left me
Have mercy on my fading life-force and what
Of my wasted body and my gravely ailing heart.
Remains of my suffering body and cloven heart

Passion endures, while union puts me off;
For the passion remains and the union evades
Patience perishes, while meeting keeps me waiting.
And patience expires while the meeting is delayed

I have not escaped envy on your account; so do not squander
I have not been devoid of jealousy over you so do not
My sleepless vigil through the rumor-spreading phantom's slander.
Undermine my vigil by disturbing imaginations

And ask the stars of night whether sleep has visited
And ask the stars of the night if sadness
My eyelid—how could it visit one it has never known?
Has visited my eyelids and how can one visit who does not know?
لاno غَرْوَwonder إنif شَحّتْit grudges بغُمْضِthe closing of جُفُونهاits eyelids

No wonder that, grudging its eyelids their closing,
If their eyes were stingy in blinking for me
My eye pours forth copious tears.
And my eyes poured with flowing tears

Through what occurred at the moment of farewell, of
And from what transpired in the stance of farewell
Parting's pain, I witnessed the terror of the Gathering.
From the sorrow of parting I saw the horror of the situation

If you have no union to grant, then promise it
If there is no union for you then renew for me
To my hope; put me off if you promise, and do not fulfill.
My hopes with it and procrastinate if you promise but do not fulfill

For your delay, to me, when fulfillment is scarce,
For your delay from me, if faithfulness is dear
Is sweet as union with a beloved who grants my wish.
Is as sweet as the union from a helpful beloved

I long for the breeze's breaths as solace;
I sigh for the breaths of the breeze complaining
And my longing is for the face of him whose fragrance they carried.
And for the face of the one whose fragrance it conveyed in yearning

For perhaps the fire within my breast, through their blowing,
Perhaps the fire of my wings from its blowing
May be quenched—yet I wish it would not be quenched.
May extinguish though I wish it does not extinguish

Oh people of my affection you are my hope and whoever
Calls to you, 'O people of my affection,' has his needs met.
Called upon you, oh people of my affection, it is enough

Return to the faithfulness you once showed,
Return to what you used to be in loyalty
Out of generosity, for I am that faithful friend.
Out of nobility for I am that sincere friend

My life without your lives I have not sworn

To the bearer of news of your coming, I would not do him justice.
To the bearer of news of your coming I would not be equitable

Do not think me pretentious in love
My passion for you is innate, without affectation.
I have a nature with you without affectation

حتىuntil لعَمريby my life كِدْتُI nearly عنيfrom myself أختفيI disappear
I concealed my love for you, and grief concealed me,
I concealed my love for you so it hid sorrow
Until, by my life, I nearly disappeared from myself.
From me that truly I almost hid from myself
وكتمْتُهُand I concealed it عنّيfrom myself فلوso if أبدَيْتُهُI revealed it

I hid it even from myself; had I revealed it,
And I withheld it from myself so had I expressed it
I would have found it more hidden than hidden subtlety.
I would have found it more hidden than the subtle concealment
ولقدand indeed أَقولُI say لِمَنْto whoever تحَرّشَmeddled بالهوىwith love
عرّضْتَyou exposed نفسَكَyourself للبَلاto affliction فاستهدفso become a target
Indeed, I say to anyone who meddles with love:
And I say to whoever dares love
You have exposed yourself to affliction—so become its target.
You have exposed yourself to affliction so take heed
أنتَyou القَتِيْلُthe slain one بأيّby whichever مَنْone whom أحبَبْتَهُyou have loved him

You will be slain by whomever you love;
You are the slain by whoever you have loved
So choose for yourself whom to favor in love.
So choose for yourself in love whom you select

إنَّthat الملامَreproach عنaway from الهوىlove مُستوقِفيwill stop me
Tell the reproacher: 'You have prolonged your blame of me, hoping
Say to the blamer, you prolonged blaming me greedily
That reproach will turn me away from love.'
Blame is halted for the lover and halted for me
دَعْleave عنكَaside from you تَعنيفيrebuking me وذُقْand taste طعمthe flavor of الهَوَىlove

Leave off rebuking me and taste love's flavor;
Leave your rebuke of me and taste the flavor of love
Then, when you have loved, rebuke me after that.
For when you fall in love, after that you may rebuke

Concealment has fled my love for one who, if in the darkness
Passion for the one who is pleased even if
He lifted his veil, I would say, 'O full moon, hide!'
He has not been affectionate to me, he has not been kind

Though others are content with his spectral image,
Love conquered so I obeyed my youthful folly
I am one not content even with union with him.
Wherein I disobeyed the reproach of a reprimander
وَقْفَاًdevoted exclusively عليِهto him مَحَبتِّيmy love ولِمِحنتيand for my affliction

My love is devoted to him alone; and for my affliction
From me is the submission and from him to me
I find no cure in anything less than perishing through him.
Is the honor of refusal and power of the weak

By love for him—it is my oath, and sufficient it is
He grew accustomed to rejection while my heart has never
As an oath—I almost revere it as the Qur'an.
Since I was not his beloved, grown accustomed
لَوْif قالَhe said تِيهاًproudly قِفْstand علىon جَمْرthe embers of الغَضاthe ghada shrub

If he proudly said, 'Stand on the embers of ghada wood,'
Oh how twisted is all that he is pleased with
I would stand obediently, without hesitation.
And his pleasure, oh how it twists it crookedly

Or were he to accept my cheek as a place to tread,
If they heard Jacob mention fleckedness
I would lay it on the ground without disdain.
In his face he forgot Joseph's beauty

Do not deny my passion for what pleases him, even if
Or if Job saw him returning in
He has not favored me with union.
The years of hardship, his feet cured of affliction

Love prevailed, and I obeyed my yearning's command
All the full moons when he appears approaching
Where, in love, I defied my reproacher's prohibition.
Yearn for him and every slender figure sways

From me to him comes the lowliness of submission; from him to me,
If I say, “In you is every youthfulness”
The withholder's might and the subjugator's strength.
Grace says to me, “And all beauty is in him”

He is accustomed to turning away, while my heart has never,
His perfections were completed so if eclipse
Since I came to be, known anything but love for him.
Gifted a garment to the full moon in its perfection, it would not be eclipsed

Oh, how charming is everything that pleases him!

And his lips' moisture—oh, how sweet it is in my mouth!
Lifetimes pass while it has not been described

And I have set all my passion for him
In his face, he would have forgotten Joseph's beauty.
Through his beauty so I praise my excellent arrangement

For the eye desires the image of beauty which
A drowse of sleep, he would long ago have been cured of affliction.
My soul aspires to, an unseen delight

Make my brother happy and sing to me his words
Yearn toward him, as does every slender-waisted figure.
And strew upon my hearing his flirtations and be tender

That I may see with the eye of hearing a witness of his beauty
He says, 'Charm is mine, and all beauty is within me.'
An essence so adorn me with that and ennoble me

His beauties are perfected; had he bestowed his radiance
Oh sister of Sa’d, from my beloved you came to me
On the moon at its fullness, it would not be eclipsed.
With a message you conveyed with tenderness

Time runs out, while something in him remains undescribed.
You did not see and knew what you did not know

Absence is not guilty and the one I love with me
My soul longs for a hidden abode.

Separation is blameless, for the one I love is with me;
If he is absent from my eye's pupil, he is within me.
