أُخفِيI hide الهَوَىlove وَمَدَامِعِيand my tears تُبْدِيهِreveal it،
وَأُمِيتُهُand I put it to death وَصَبَابَتِيand my yearning تُحْيِيهِrevives it.
I hide love, yet my tears reveal it,
and I put it to death, yet my yearning revives it.
وَمُعَذِّبِيand my tormentor حُلْوُsweet الشَّمَائِلِcharacter traits أَهْيَفٌslender-waisted،
قَدْindeed جمعتْhave been gathered كلُّall المَحَاسِنِgraces فِيهِin him.
My tormentor is sweet in disposition, slender-waisted;
indeed, all graces have been gathered in him.
فكأنهُso it is as though he فِيin الحُسْنِbeauty صُورَةُthe image of يوسفٍJoseph،
وكأننيand it is as though I فِيin الحُزنِsorrow مِثْلُlike أبيهِhis father.
So, in beauty, he is like the image of Joseph,
and in sorrow, I am like his father.
ياO حارقاone who burns بالنارwith fire وجهthe face of محبهhis lover

O you who burn your lover's face with fire,
be gentle, for my tears quench it.
أحرقburn بهاwith it جسديmy body وand كلall جوارحيmy limbs
واحرصand take care علىof قلبيmy heart فإنكfor you فيهِin it.
Burn my body and all my limbs with it,
and take care of my heart, for you are in it.
إنif أنكرdeny العشاقthe lovers فيكfor you صبابتيmy yearning
فأناthen I am الهوىlove وand ابنthe son of الهوىlove وand أبيهِits father.
If lovers deny my yearning for you,
then I am love, and love's son, and its father.
