أمرتَYou commanded إلهيmy God بالمكارمto practice noble virtues كلهاall of them
ولمand did not ترضهاapprove of them إلاexcept وأنتwhile You لهاof them أهلُworthy
You enjoined every noble virtue, my God,
You commanded all noble virtues, my God,
and would not commend them were You not Yourself worthy of them.
Nor did You approve them without being worthy of them Yourself.
فقلتso You said اصفحواpardon عمَّنwhoever أساءdid wrong إليكمُto you
وعودواand respond بحلمwith forbearance منكُمُfrom you إنif بداappears جهلُfolly
So You said: “Forgive whoever wrongs you,
So You said, “Pardon whoever has wronged you,
and answer with forbearance of your own whenever folly appears.”
And respond with your own forbearance if folly appears.”
فهلthen is there لجهولfor a foolish man خافfeared صَعبthe gravity of ذنوبهhis sins
لديكwith You أمانٌsafety منكfrom You أوor جانبٌa side سهلُgentle
Then, for a fool who fears the grievous burden of his sins,
Then is there, for a fool who fears the gravity of his sins,
is there, with You, assurance from You—or a gentle side?
Safety with You, granted by You—or a gentle side?
