إلهي إنّي شاكر لك حامدُ

إلهي إنّي شاكر لك حامدُ

وإني لساع في رضاك وجاهدُ

وإني لساع في رضاك وجاهدُ

My God, I am grateful to You and praise You.

And I strive and labor for Your pleasure.

وأنك مهما زلتِ النعلُ بالفتى

وأنك مهما زلتِ النعلُ بالفتى

على العائد التواب بالعفو عائدُ

على العائد التواب بالعفو عائدُ

And You, whenever a young man's sandal slips,

Return with pardon to the repentant one who turns back.

تباعدت مجداً وأدنيت تعطُّفا

تباعدت مجداً وأدنيت تعطُّفا

وحِلماً فأنت المُدَّني المتباعدُ

وحِلماً فأنت المُدَّني المتباعدُ

You stand far above in glory, yet bring us near in compassion

And forbearance: You draw near, yet remain far above.

وما لي على شيءٍ سواك معولَّ

وما لي على شيءٍ سواك معولَّ

إذا دهمتني المُعضلات الشدائدُ

إذا دهمتني المُعضلات الشدائدُ

And I rely on nothing but You

When grievous, intractable troubles assail me.

وقِدماً دعا قومٌ سواك فلم يقُم

وقِدماً دعا قومٌ سواك فلم يقُم

على ذاك برهان ولا لاح شاهدُ

على ذاك برهان ولا لاح شاهدُ

And long ago, people invoked others besides You, yet there arose

No proof for that, nor did any witness appear.

وبالفلك الدوار قد ضل معشر

وبالفلك الدوار قد ضل معشر

وللنيرات السبع داعٍ وساجدُ

وللنيرات السبع داعٍ وساجدُ

And the revolving celestial sphere has led some astray;

And to the seven luminaries people pray and bow down.

وللعقل عبّاد وللنفس شيعة

وللعقل عبّاد وللنفس شيعة

وكلهم عن مهج الحق حائدُ

وكلهم عن مهج الحق حائدُ

And the intellect has worshippers, and the soul has followers,

And all of them turn aside from the very heart of truth.

وكيف يَضِل القصدَ ذو العلم والنُهى

وكيف يَضِل القصدَ ذو العلم والنُهى

ونهجَ الهدى من كان نحوك قاصدُ

ونهجَ الهدى من كان نحوك قاصدُ

And how could one with knowledge and reason miss the right course,

Or one intent on You miss the path of guidance?

وهل في التي طاعوا لها وتعبَّدوا

وهل في التي طاعوا لها وتعبَّدوا

لأمرك عاصٍ أو لحقك جاحدُ

لأمرك عاصٍ أو لحقك جاحدُ

And is there, among those they obeyed and worshipped,

One who disobeys Your command or denies Your due?

وهل يوجد المعلول من غير علة

وهل يوجد المعلول من غير علة

إذا صح فكر أو رأى الرشد راشد

إذا صح فكر أو رأى الرشد راشد

And can an effect exist without a cause,

If thought is sound, or a discerning person sees the right course?

وهل غبت عن شيءٍ فينكِرَ منكرٌ

وهل غبت عن شيءٍ فينكِرَ منكرٌ

وجودُك أم لم تبدُ منك الشواهدُ

وجودُك أم لم تبدُ منك الشواهدُ

And have You been absent from anything, that a denier might deny

Your existence—or have no signs from You appeared?

وفي كل معبود سواك دلائلٌ

وفي كل معبود سواك دلائلٌ

من الصنع تنبي أنه لك عابدُ

من الصنع تنبي أنه لك عابدُ

And in everything worshipped besides You are signs

Of craftsmanship, revealing that it worships You.

وكل وجودٍ عن وجودك كائن

وكل وجودٍ عن وجودك كائن

فواجدُ أصناف الورى لك واجدُ

فواجدُ أصناف الورى لك واجدُ

And all existence arises from Your existence;

So whoever finds the varied kinds of creatures finds You.

سرت منك فيها وحدة لو منعتها

سرت منك فيها وحدة لو منعتها

لأصبحتِ الأشياءُ وهي بوائدُ

لأصبحتِ الأشياءُ وهي بوائدُ

A unity from You flows through them; were You to withhold it,

Then all things would pass away.

وكم لك في خلق الورى من دلائل

وكم لك في خلق الورى من دلائل

يراها الفتى في نفسه ويشاهدُ

يراها الفتى في نفسه ويشاهدُ

And how many signs of You lie in the making of creatures,

Which a young man sees and witnesses within himself!

كفى مكذباً للجاحديك نفوسهم

كفى مكذباً للجاحديك نفوسهم

تخاصمهم أن أنكروا وتعاندُ

تخاصمهم أن أنكروا وتعاندُ

Their own souls suffice to refute those who deny You;

They dispute with them over their denial and stand against them.
