خَليليَّmy two friends ماwhat للريحwith the wind أضحىhas begun نسيمُهاits breeze
يذكرنيreminds me ماwhat قدalready مضىhas passed ونَسيتُand I forgot
My two friends, why has the wind’s breeze begun
My beloved, why has the breeze of the wind
to remind me of what has passed and I had forgotten?
Reminded me of what has passed and I forgot
أبعدَafter …? نذيرthe warning الشيبof gray hair إذwhen حلَّsettled عرضيmy cheek
صَبَوتI grew enamored بأحداقwith the eyes المهاof oryxes وسُبيتُand I was taken captive
After gray hair’s warning had settled on my cheek,
After the warning of old age settled in my temple
did I grow enamored of oryx eyes and become their captive?
I was youthful in the eyes of longing and was captivated
وليand I have سكنa beloved أغرىincited بيagainst me الحزنَsorrow حسنُهhis beauty
جريءٌbold علىin قتلslaying المحبthe lover مُقيتُcapable
And I have a beloved whose beauty has set sorrow upon me,
And I have a dwelling that allures me with its beauty of sorrow
bold and able to slay the lover.
Bold in killing the lover I am hated
فياso, O قمراًmoon أغرىincited بيagainst me النقصwaning واكتسىand clothed himself
كمالاًin fullness ووافيand complete سعدهhis good fortune وشقيتُand I was wretched
So, O moon, you have made me wane while clothing yourself
So it was a moon that allured me with its deficiency and wore
in fullness; your fortune is complete, while I am wretched!
Perfection and met its happiness while I was miserable

You rule: so pity, now that you rule, a lovesick wanderer
And if only we separated when I wished
whom your honey-sweet dark lips captivated; I fell under your sway.
Its trouble would not have let me be like honey from you, and oh how I wish
وجوديand be generous ببردwith the coolness الوصلof union ياO جنَّةَparadise المُنىof wishes
فأنّيfor I بحَرby the heat الوجدof longing منكfrom you صُليتُI was scorched
And grant me the coolness of union, O paradise of wishes,
And my existence in the cold of union, O heaven of wishes
for I have been scorched by the heat of longing for you.
For I was frozen in the sea of passion for you
