You have worn me down with abandonment—how unjust you are!
So have mercy; may the All-Merciful have mercy on you.

So be gentle with it; he who made you ruler would give his life for you.
مَاhow كَانwere أحْلَىsweet قُبُلاتِthe kisses of الهَوَىlove

How sweet love’s kisses were!
If you do not remember, then ask your mouth.
تَمُرُّyou pass بِيby me كَأَنَّنِيas though I لَمْnot أَكُنْI had been
ثَغْرَكَyour lips أَوْor صَدْرَكَyour breast أَوْor مِعْصَمَكْyour wrist
You pass me by as though I had never been
Your lips, or your breast, or your wrist.
لَوْif مَرَّpassed سَيْفٌa sword بَيْنَنَاbetween us لَمْnot نَكُنْwe would have been

Had a sword passed between us, we would not have
Known whether it drew my blood or yours.
سَلْask الدُّجَىthe darkness كَمْhow much رَاقَنِيdelighted me نَدْمُهُits remorse
لَمَّاwhen حَكَيresembled مَبْسَمَهُits smile مَبْسَمَكْyour smile
Ask the darkness how much its remorse delighted me
When its smile resembled your smile.
يَاO بَدْرُfull moon إِنْif وَاصَلْتَنِىyou keep treating me بِالْجَفَاwith coldness

O full moon, if you keep treating me with coldness,
And I, your lover, die in the bloom of youth,
قُلْsay لِلدُّجَىto the darkness: مَاتَhas died شَهِيْدُthe martyr of الْوَفَاfidelity
فَانْثُرْso scatter عَلَىupon أَكْفَانِهِhis shrouds أَنْجُمَكْyour stars
Tell the darkness: “The martyr of fidelity has died;
so scatter your stars upon his shrouds.”
