كعاشقٍlike a lover خطَّwrote سطراًa line فيabout الهوىlove ومحاand erased it
It weeps and laughs, neither from sorrow nor joy,
He cries and laughs, not out of sorrow or joy
like a lover who wrote a line about love and erased it;
Like a lover who penned a line in passion and erased

in its poems is a whisper of the star's smile,
From the smile of a star he whispered in his poems
and of a stolen glance at the gazelle that passed by—
And from conversing with a gazelle who yielded

كبرعمlike a bud لـمـستهtouched it الريحthe wind فانفـتحاso it opened
a heart seasoned in pleasures while still young,
A heart seasoned with pleasures while still a youth
like a bud that opened at the wind's touch.
Like a branch that the wind has touched so it opened

عـنّاaway from us هواهاher love؟أرقthe tenderest الـحسنbeauty ماthat which سمحاwas generous
Why has the dusky daisy turned
Why has the dark-complexioned one turned
her love away from us? Beauty is tenderest when generous.
Her love away from us? The most beautiful face would not be so stingy
لوif كنتyou were تدرينyou know ماألقاهwhat I suffer منof شجنsorrow
لكنتyou would be أرفقthe gentlest مـنof those who آسىconsoled ومنand those who صفحاpardoned
If you knew the sorrow I suffer,
If you knew the sorrow he endured
you would be the gentlest of those who console and forgive.
You would be kinder than one who blamed or forgave
غداةَthe morning when لوَّحْتِyou beckoned بالآمالwith hopes باسمةًsmiling
لانsoftened الذيwhat ثارrebelled وانقادand yielded الذيwhat جمحاran wild
On the morning you held out hopes, smiling,
Tomorrow if you waved hopes with a smile
what had rebelled softened, and what had run wild yielded.
For he who rebelled and he who attacked recklessly

I care not, while the tongue of love calls to me,
It does not concern me though the tongue of love hails me
whether the face of time smiles or scowls.
Whether the face of fate smiles or frowns

منof جانحٍa winged creature رفَّfluttered أوor منof صادحٍa songbird صدحاsang out
For gardens, however lush they grow, are barren if deprived
However much the garden blooms, it is a wasteland if deprived
of a bird that flutters or a songbird that sings.
Of a wing that fluttered or a voice that echoed
