It weeps and laughs, neither from sorrow nor from joy,

Like a lover who wrote a line of love and erased it.

In its poems is a whisper of the star's smile,

And of the stolen glance of the gazelle that came into view.

A heart seasoned in pleasures while still young,

Like a bud that opened at the wind's touch.

What ails the dusky daisy, that she has turned

Her love away from us? The tenderest beauty is that which gives freely.

If you knew the sorrow I endure,

You would be the gentlest of those who console and forgive.

The morning you beckoned with hopes, smiling,

What had rebelled softened, and what had run wild yielded.

I care not, while the tongue of love calls to me,

Whether time's face smiles or scowls.

For the garden, however resplendent, is barren if deprived

Of a winged creature that flutters or a singer that sings.
