لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw الحَظَّfortune حَظَّthe lot of الجاهِلِthe fool
لَمّا رَأَيتُ الحَظَّ حَظَّ الجاهِلِ
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see المَغبونَthe cheated one غَيرَother than العاقِلِthe wise man
وَلَم أَرَ المَغبونَ غَيرَ العاقِلِ
When I saw that fortune was the fool's lot,
When I saw the luck of the ignorant man,
And saw no one cheated but the wise man,
And saw none afflicted save he who was wise,
رَحَّلتُI saddled عَنساًa sturdy she-camel مِنof شَرابِthe wine of بابِلِBabylon
رَحَّلتُ عَنساً مِن شَرابِ بابِلِ
فَبِتُّso I spent the night مِنfrom عَقليmy reason عَلىat مَراحِلِstages of a journey
فَبِتُّ مِن عَقلي عَلى مَراحِلِ
I saddled a sturdy she-camel of Babylon's wine,
I took my wares and left the wines of Babylon,
So I spent the night many stages away from my reason.
And spent the night in stages of intelligent thoughts.
