فَلاso may not تَبعُدyou be far away فَكُلُّfor every فَتىًyoung man سَيَأتيwill come
عَليهِupon him المَوتُdeath يَطرُقُcomes by night أَوor يُغاديcomes in the morning
So may you not be far away, for every young man will be visited
So do not go far; death will come upon
By death, whether it comes by night or in the morning.
Every youth, creeping up or at full speed,
وَكُلُّand every ذَخيَرةٍtreasure لاno بُدَّescape يَوماًone day
وَإِنand even if بَقِيَتُit endures تَصيرُit comes إِلىto نَفادِexhaustion
And every treasure must one day,
And every treasure will one day run out,
Even if it endures, be exhausted.
Though it remain, to depletion it leads,
وَلَوand if يَفديcould ransom مِنَfrom الحَدَثانِtime’s calamities شَيءٌanything
فَدَيتُكَI would ransom you بِالطَريفِwith newly acquired wealth وَبِالتِلادِand with inherited wealth
And if anything could ransom one from time’s calamities,
And if anything could stave off what is new
I would ransom you with newly acquired and inherited wealth.
For your sake, I'd pay with the fresh and green.
