راحَت رَواحاً بَينَ كُنّادِ
وَأَخلَفَتand she failed to fulfill ظَنّيmy expectation وَميعاديand my appointed tryst
وَأَخلَفَت ظَنّي وَميعادي
She departed at evening amid Kunnād,
She went away between the sand dunes
And disappointed my hopes and failed my tryst.
And broke my expectations and my promises
وَبِتُّand I spent the night مُشتاقاًyearning إِلىfor وَجهِهاher face
وَبِتُّ مُشتاقاً إِلى وَجهِها

أَلقى عَلَيهِ غُلَّةَ الصادي
And I spent the night yearning for her face,
I spend the night longing for her face
Upon it I find a parched man's burning thirst.
Bearing the cover of loss upon me

شيمَةُ ما في الوَعدِ ميعادِ
So I told my soul: “Stop! It is
So I said to myself, stop, she is
Her way: no meeting lies within the promise.”
Of the nature of the untrue promise

Not every lightning flash points the way to rain,
Not every lightning flash has pouring rain
Nor is every frequent visitor a friend.
Nor every friend is trustworthy

How many watering places below her are fertile
And mountain summits and heaped sand-ridges,
And lofty sand dunes and twining vines

So console a soul whose heart is transfixed
So cheer up a soul whose heart longs
By losing one not worth missing.
For one not lost and missed

And a companion who gives and displays nobility—
And a companion who gives and shows nobility
A rider of terrors and timbers—
Enduring fears and returning

I kept him company in kingship or on his return;
I accompanied him in power or its loss
So he swelled the number of my enviers.
And increased the number of my enviers

O you who seek needs, do not disobey me
And listen, for I am an adviser and guide.
And listen, I am an advising guide

Have done with Hammād and his rags;
Leave Hammad and his character
There is no good in Hammād's rags.
No good is in the character of Hammad

He who prefers the head to his Lord,
One who prefers the head to his Lord
And puts the pig among his provisions;
And puts the pig among provisions

A relentless pursuer of boys whenever he goes out in the morning—
Chasing boys whenever he goes out
Not every sodomite is such a pursuer.
Not every sodomite is a chaser

I have disowned this man and his creed;
I am quit of him and his religion
Each morning he lies in wait for the fawn.
He lays up at daybreak to ambush

Wretched al-Shawānī! He has a lineage
Miserable is the officer, he has a position
In the house of Nihyā that none seeks out.
Among the family of Nuhayy, not often visited

He does not drink wine, but
Eats it like a man who exceeds all bounds.
He eats it, eating like Imr'e Al-Qais

A lying father named you Hammad
You are no constant praiser of God.
You are not Hammad for God

After fifty years that you have completed,
After fifty which you completed
Do you weep over the night-talking transgressor's arse?
You cry over the peg of Is, the usual

You have turned away from the shame of the Hashimites
And with death the camel-driver chants you onward.
And death urges you on towards it

Were it not for your turning aside and fulfilling
Upon you, and you would have joined the provisions.
His vow in you, you would be among provisions

You are not a fornicator; rather,
You are not an adulterer, but
You inherited it from a privy and a prolific begetter.
You have inherited from a wandering seducer

You would refrain from my anger and rejection
