Sa'da's saliva, O son of al-Dujayl, is the cure.

So give it to me to drink: for every ailment there is a remedy.

My companions fell asleep, leaving me; I know no sleep.

There is a mote in my eye, and sickness in my heart.

And the tale-bearers say, "You have loved Sa'da."

They spoke truly—by the Majestic One, my love is an incurable ailment.

I do not see myself surviving; the beloved has departed,

and enemies have surrounded my homes.

The compassionate adviser has gone, and now

the loathed one is my house's neighbor—this is affliction.

She lived beside us, like water, for a while; then, when

she departed, there was no water for one parched with thirst.

So join night to day, seeking a dark-eyed one,

in whom are flirtation and evasiveness.

And take comfort in the beloved amid what you face:

everything but the beloved is hardship.

And the physician says: in God's mercy

there is help, but I have none.

The loss of one departed is bearable, so long as you are safe.

What soul has found what it desires unclouded?

It does not fade through patiently bearing his absence; over a long

    time, consolation comes to you.

    كُلُّ كَأسٍ لَهُ بِها أَقذاءُ

    The target of misfortunes is not unscathed;

every cup of his holds specks of dirt.
