وَما الناسُ إِلّا صاحِباكَ فَمِنهُمُ

People are but your two companions; among them are

People are but your two companions, so of them is

A generous man and one whose hands are shackled by miserliness.

One who is generous and one who is miserly.

فَسامِح يَداً ما أَمكَنَتكَ فَإِنَّها

فَسامِح يَداً ما أَمكَنَتكَ فَإِنَّها

تُقِلُّ وَتُثري وَالعَواذِلُ في شُغل

تُقِلُّ وَتُثري وَالعَواذِلُ في شُغل

So be generous with your hand as long as you can, for it

So be lenient with the hand that gives you what it can, for it

Grows poor and grows rich, while the reproaching women are occupied.

Gives little at times and gives plenty at others, while the wretched are busy with their concerns.
