مَسَّنيtouched me مِنfrom صُدودِthe turning away of عَبدَةَʿAbdah ضَرُّpain
فَبَناتُso the daughters الفُؤادِof the heart ماnot تَستَقِرُّcome to rest
Pain has touched me through ʿAbdah’s turning away.
The harm from the repulsions of Abdata hurts me,
So the daughters of the heart find no rest.
So the daughters of my heart know no peace.
ذاكَthat شَيءٌsomething فيin القَلبِthe heart مِنfrom حُبِّlove of عَبّاʿAbbā- (first part of ʿAbbādah)
دَةَ-dah (completing ʿAbbādah) بادٍmanifest وَباطِنٌand hidden يَستَسِرُّconceals itself
That is something in the heart from love of ʿAbbā—
That is something in my heart from love for Abba,
—dah, outwardly manifest and inwardly concealed.
An outward expression, yet an inward secret.
نَفَرَfled الحَيُّthe tribe مِنfrom مَكانيmy place فَقالواthen they said

The tribe fled from my place, then said:
The living fled from my place and said:
“Prevail through patience; perhaps your eye will heal.”
Escape with patience, perhaps your eyes will see.
