ياOh لَيتَif only ليfor me قَلباًa heart بِقَلبٍin return for a heart يُثيبrepays
أَوor لَيتَif only ليfor me حُبّاًa love بِحُبّيin return for my love يُنيبreturns
Oh, if only I had a heart that would answer mine,
Oh, if only my heart would reciprocate,
or a love that would return my love.
Or if only my love would make him return.
مَلِلتُI have tired of قَلبيmy heart لاnot يُمَلُّis wearied of الهَوىlove
ياOh طولَhow long إِغراميmy infatuation بِمَنwith one who لاnot يُجيبanswers
I am weary of my heart; love never grows tiresome.
My heart is weary, but passion does not tire.
Oh, how long my passion for one who does not answer!
Oh, my deep infatuation with one who does not respond!
قَلبيmy heart وَهَمّيand my worry أَذهَباhave both taken away راحَتيmy rest
فَالنَفسُso the soul حَرّىparched وَلِعَينيand my eye has غُروبstreams of tears
My heart and my worry have taken away my rest;
My heart and my imagination have taken away my peace.
so my soul is parched, and my eye pours tears.
My soul burns, and my eyes set.
لَمdid not تَرَyou see مِثليmy like بَينَbetween مِثلَيهِماtwo like them
هَذاthis one بِهِin it داءٌan illness وَهَذاand this one كَذوبa habitual liar
You have never seen my like between two such as these:
None have seen the like of me among the likes of them both.
this one has an illness, and this one is a liar.
This one makes me sick, and that one tells lies.
قَدindeed كَلَّفانيthey both burdened me with عَمَلاًwork خائِباًfruitless
وَعامِلُand one who works for اللَهِGod الَّذيthe one who لاnot يَخيبfails
They have burdened me with fruitless toil,
They have burdened me with failed work,
but the one who works for God never fails.
Yet the Worker of God is He who does not fail.
لِلَّهِto God دَرّيmy worth (in self-praise) لَيسَthere is not ليfor me مَنزَعٌa way of escape
عَنfrom حُبِّlove of سَلمىSalma وَهَواهاand passion for her مُريبdisquieting
God bless me! I have no escape
Woe to me! I have no escape
from love of Salma, though passion for her is disquieting.
From love of Salma and her misleading passion.
لَقَدindeed أَرىI see سَلمىSalma لَناof ours جارَةًa neighbor
ياO اِبنَson of سُهَيلٍSuhayl بَينَbetween حابٍHab وَلوبand Lub
Indeed, I see Salma, a neighbor of ours,
I see that Salma has become a neighbor to us—
O Ibn Suhayl, between Hab and Lub:
O son of Suhayl, between yearning and affection!
كَالبَدرِlike the full moon فيto العَينِthe eye إِذَwhen عُطِّلَتshe was unadorned
وَفيand in المُحَلّىfinery كَالمُحَلِّlike the adorned one القَشيبfresh and bright
like the full moon to the eye when unadorned,
Like the full moon in the eye when unveiled,
and in finery, like one freshly adorned.
And in adornment like the adorned litter.
أَراجِعٌbringing back? أَنتَyou لَناfor us مَجلِساًa gathering
بَينَamid مُدامٍwine وَسَماعِand music مُنيبstirring
Will you bring back for us a gathering
Will you return to us, in a session
amid wine and stirring music?
Among wine and the plucking of strings?
ياOh حَبَّذاhow lovely ذاكَthat عَلىdespite نَأيِهِits remoteness
وَحَبَّذاand how lovely لَيلَتُناour night بِالكَثيبby the sand dune
Oh, how lovely that was, despite its remoteness,
Blessed was that in its remoteness,
and how lovely our night by the sand dune!
And blessed was our night at the sand-hill.
