ياO طَلَلَruin الحَيِّthe tribe بِذاتِat Dhat الصَمدِal-Samad
بِاللَهِby God حَدِّثtell كَيفَhow كُنتَyou were بَعديafter me
O ruin of the tribe at Dhat al-Samad,
O relic of the beloved at Al-Samad,
By God, tell me how you have been since I left.
By Allah, tell me how you've been after me.
أَوحَشتَyou grew desolate مِنbereft of دَعدٍDa'd وَنُؤيِand the encircling trench of دَعدِDa'd
بَعدَafter زَمانٍa time ناعِمٍgentle وَمَردِand youthful vigor
You lie desolate, bereft of Da'd and Da'd's encircling trench,
Did you become desolate, from Da'ad and Naw'?
After a time of ease and youthful vigor.
After a soft, fertile time?
عَهداًa remembered time لَناof ours سَقياًmay rain bless لَهُit مِنsuch a عَهدِtime
إِذwhen نَحنُwe أَخيافٌof differing kinds بِماin what نُؤَدّيwe fulfill
A time we shared—may rain bless that time!
An era for us, quenching for it from the pact,
When we differed in how we fulfilled our pledges:
When we are brothers in what we fulfill.
يُخلِفنَthey break وَعداًa promise وَنَفيand we fulfill بِوَعدِa promise
فَنَحنُso we مِنfrom جَهدِthe hardship of الهَوىpassion فيinto جَهدِhardship
They broke a promise, while we kept a promise.
It reneges on a promise, and denies with a vow,
So we passed from love's hardship into hardship.
So we are exhausted by fervor in exhaustion.
نَلهوwe play إِلىbeside نَورِthe blossoms of الخُزامىlavender الثَعدِthe tender

فيamid زاهِرٍflowering growth مِنof سَبِطٍstraight-growing shoots وَجَعدِand curled shoots
We played beside the tender lavender blossoms,
We frolic to the light of Al-Khuzam's thigh,
Amid flowering growth, some straight and some curled,
In a blossoming youth from Saba'a and Ja'd.

Ever amid the east wind's thickets, among laurels,
He hasn't stopped swaggering youthfully,
Swaying proudly in the moistening water of dew,
Swaggering in the dewy water that flows gently,
حَتّىuntil اِكتَسىit clothed itself مِثلَlike عُيونِthe patterned eyes of البُردِa mantle

Until it donned a robe like the patterned eyes of a mantle:
Until he was clad like the eyes of ice,
A meadow at the dwelling of Wahib ibn Find.
In the meadows of Maghna and Wahib bin Find.

Time bestowed upon it, without being asked,
Time gifted it to him and he did not donate,
The variegated robes of bountiful hada blossoms.
The outskirts of glimmering honor that donates.

I was given in exchange مِنfor ذاكَthat بُكىًweeping لاnot يُجديavailing
Its fragrant herbs greeted the forenoon with bowed heads.
It meets the morn with its bowing basil,
In place of that, I was given unavailing weeping.
I changed from that to endless weeping.
آذَنَannounced طِلباتُthe objects sought الصِبىof youth بِصَدِّrejection

طالَبَنيpressed upon me أَمرٌa matter وَلَيسَand is not يُجديprofitable
The objects of youthful longing announced rejection.
The requests of childhood signaled firmly
A matter pressed upon me, yet brought no profit.
A matter summoned me and weeping is no use,
فَهَنَّso they لاdo not يَشفينَنيcure me بِبَردِwith cooling relief
وَقَدand already أَرانيI see myself فيin الصِبىyouth الأَجَدِّthe freshest
So those women bring me no cooling cure.
So they weakened, they won't heal me with coolness,
Yet I once saw myself in freshest youth
And they saw me in severe childhood,
كَالبَدِّlike the idol فيهِنَّamong them لِأَهلِto the devotees of البَدِّthe idol

Like an idol among them, to the idol's devotees.
Like the badness among the people of badness.
Such was I; then the departure of the Azd afflicted me.
This and the march of Al-Azd notified me,
سِربٌa flock of women تَراءىappeared كَنِظامِlike the string of العَقدِthe necklace

حُلوُsweet الحَديثِin speech حَسَنُgraceful التَصَدّيin appearing
A flock of women appeared, like beads strung on a necklace,
A caravan that appears like a necklace's string,
Sweet in speech, graceful in their appearance.
Sweet conversation, excellent companion,

Ah, for Asma', daughter of al-Ashadd!
Woe to the daughter of Al-Ashad!
She stood displaying herself when she saw me alone,
She stood appearing when she saw me alone,

Like the sun between rents in a cloud-veil:
Like the sun between the igniting embers,
The dominion of brightness over darkness.
A sultan whitening over blackness,

ثُمَّthen اِنثَنَتshe turned back كَالنَفسِlike the breath المُرتَدِّreturning
She withheld one cheek and unveiled another,
Frowning with a cheek, and avoiding with a cheek,
Then turned away like a breath drawn back.
Then she leaned like the panting breath,
وَرُحتُand I went away مِنfrom عِرقِthe vein of الهَوىpassion أُصَدّيI grow thirsty

ياO عَجَباًwhat wonder لِلعاجِزِat the helpless one المُسَدّيthe contriver
And I went away, thirsting from the very vein of passion.
And I went back dripping with passion's sweat.
How strange, the helpless weaver of schemes!
What a wonder is the helpless pleader!
حُدِدتُI was deprived عَنof حَظّيmy share وَلَمand did not أَجَدِّhave good luck

I was barred from my share and found no luck.
I missed my fortune and did not attain.
Weak effort did fools no harm;
What harmed the people of misery is weakness of struggle,
وافَقَattained حَظّاًa share مَنwhoever سَعىstrove بِجَدِّwith good fortune

قُلsay لِلزُبَيرِto al-Zubayr السائِليwho asks me عَنabout وُلديmy children
Whoever strove with good fortune attained his share.
And who strived with diligence attained good fortune.
Say to al-Zubayr, who asks me about my children:
Say to Az-Zubair who asks about my son:
الحُرُّthe free man يوصىis counseled وَالعَصاand the stick لِلعَبدِis for the slave
وَلَيسَand there is not لِلمُحلِفِfor the oath-demander مِثلُthe equal of الرَدِّrefusal
The free man is counseled; the stick is for the slave.
The freeman bequeaths while the stick is for the slave.
Nothing answers an oath-demander like refusal.
The oath-taker has no equal retribution,
فَاِرضَso accept بِنَصفٍfairness وَأَزِحand move aside فيin القَصدِmoderation

النَصفُfairness يَكفيكَsuffices you مِنَagainst التَعَدّيtransgression
So accept fairness, and move toward moderation.
So be content with half and be moderate in purpose.
Fairness suffices to keep you from transgression.
Half is enough for you without transgression,
وَصاحِبٍand many a companion كَالدُمَّلِlike a boil المُمِدِّthe suppurating

And many a companion, like a suppurating boil,
And a friend like the perpetual flow.
From whom I awaited something like a watering-day:
I watch for the likes of him like the day of roses,

I bore him on a patch of my own skin,
Carrying it in a parchment scroll from my skin,
Patiently, keeping myself above what he offered,
With patience and asceticism for what leads
حَتّىuntil اِنطَوىhe vanished غَيرَnot فَقيدِmissed الفَقدِin his loss

Until he vanished, his loss unmourned.
Until the unlike was embraced except the loss of loss.
He never knew my desire from my disdain.
And he doesn't know what my inclination was in my asceticism,

And many a tract with effaced paths and elusive water,
And the silence of composure, the passionate lover.
Deserted save for the cries of echoing owls:

Ground where you see its chameleon like a monkey,
Swaying in the meadow of dawn that stretches,
Swaying in the spreading light of early forenoon.

The gazelles hide wonder and show,
Crooked country concealing wonders and revealing them,
With shining coats like the shining white,

Gleaming ahead of me and behind me,
Flashing before me, and sometimes behind me.
As if the tips of their thickets bow down.

Its furthest hills seem to weave—
No! But they bow down sometimes and run.
No, rather to pray at times, and gallop,
They slumber in their flourishing place of slumber,

I cleaved it with a tireless, towering camel,
Who meets morn with a scowling frown,
Meeting the forenoon on a hard-worked foot,
And a watching, beholding, tender glance,
وَنَظَرٍand a gaze راعٍvigilant وَهادٍand a neck نَهدِlofty

With a vigilant gaze and a lofty neck,
And an owl-like attitude like solid stone.
And a rounded head like solid rock.
I spurred him so he outpaced freely without resistance,

I burdened it, broad-bodied and spare of hide,
He continued sometimes trotting and sometimes galloping
With traversing the soft-soiled plains, without a peer.
In the belly of a camel, and on a solid back,
ماnot زالَceased يَشدوmoving onward تارَةًat times وَيَخديand striding swiftly

Smooth that cannot be guided,
Through soft hollows and over hard uplands:
Until he ended like an old palm trunk,

Smooth ground where no guide can find the way,
So he cracked under a glorious rider,
Until it became like the edge of a leather thong.
Returning water and wealth like water of torrents,
فَاِنصَدَعَتso it opened عَنto reveal راكِبٍa rider مُجِدِّpressing onward

And a vanishing one who hid for the town's hidden,
Frequenting waters like the fluid of birth,
A banner that meets with long adversity,

In it the twigs of acacia are kindled,

With changing crowns in its advance.
But only by the water of thundering rainclouds.

Crowned in yellow among roses,
And the carnation infused with the fawn's color,

With red blossoms not yet darkened.

At morning feeding, like an early comer from the east,
The sun wanders in it, the one with flames,
Variegated like the eyes of sleek horses.
When its flies rouse with defiance.

The blazing sun is bewildered within it.
It rivaled the starlings like the prepared,
When its singing flies begin their chant,
I bid it good morning in the shade of a lofty cliff,

The lark answers like one calling for help.
Early before the hyenas' going,
I reached it at dawn beneath a lofty raincloud,
With a barren, very barren she-camel or a young one,
غُدَيَّةًone early morning قَبلَbefore غُدُوِّthe morning flight of السُبدِthe nightjar
بِعاقِرٍon a barren she-camel جَدّاءَdry-uddered أَوor أَجَدِّdrier still
One early morning before the nightjar's morning flight,
Seeking the distinction of the plump hyenas,
On a barren, dry-uddered camel, or one drier still,
But do you see the gleam of the singular beloved,
يَطلُبُit seeks شَأوَthe pace of اليَعمُلاتِhardworking camels الجُدِّthe sturdy

Seeking the pace of sturdy, hardworking camels.
Faithful from the eye with the star of fortune?
But do you see the flashes of the solitary piled cloud,
A wind sings with it and a wind makes it tender,
وافيcoming مِنَfrom العَينِthe rain-bearing quarter بِنَجمِwith the star of السَعدِgood fortune

Coming from the rain-bearing quarter with the star of fortune?
As if the wailing of grieving women,
One wind drives it onward, and another guides it,
Were in a courtyard gleaming with the Furand,
كَأَنَّas though أَنواحُmourning bands of النِساءِwomen الجُدِّthe dry-breasted

As though bands of dry-breasted mourning women
It topped the valley and highest Najd,
Flashed watered blades in an open court.
The ostrich struts in it like the heavy necked.

Within it, lightning runs like dusky ostriches.
It lights up the left side after the slumber,

Carnation pink like mountains of Kurd,
It lights for the watcher, after sleep,
Bursting clouds, defeat of thunder,

Dark hills like the mountains of the Kurds,
I said to it when it dug in the pact
Bursting with crashes, booming with thunder.
And submerged the valley and others.

With paths like the gentle, pure honey:
And flooded the hollows and the ground beyond them
Surrender and you are greeted Abu Al-Milaad!

You are the harvest of the lote-tree and death of the enemy,
Live safe and be greeted, Abu al-Miladd!
Crowned by forefathers, tremendous backup,
أَنتَyou جَنىthe fruit of العودِthe tree وَمَوتُand the death of الرِئدِthe peer
مُتَوَّجُcrowned الآباءِin forefathers ضَخمُmighty الرِفدِin gifts
You are the fruit of the tree and the death of your peer,
Key to the door of sealed youth,
Crowned through your forefathers, lavish in gifts,
What a blessed shrine of the confessor and pilgrim!
مِفتاحُthe key to بابِthe door of الحَدَثِmisfortune المُنسَدِّthe closed
نِعمَexcellent مَزارُvisiting place of المُعتَفيthe gift-seeker وَالوَفدِand the delegation
The key to misfortune's bolted door.
And you are for the soldiers and others.
A splendid destination for gift-seekers and delegations!
Shared sustenance and patron of the clubs,
وَأَنتَand you لِلجُندِfor the troops وَغَيرِand others than الجُندِthe troops
مُشتَرَكُshared النَيلِbounty وَرِيُّand rich in sparks الزَندِthe fire-stick
For soldiers and those who are not soldiers, you are
You precede whoever rivals you before ferocity,
A bounty shared by all, a fire-stick rich in sparks.
With forbearance, kindness, and skillful cleverness.
تَسبِقُyou outstrip مَنwhoever جاراكَraces you قَبلَbefore الشَدِّthe running
بِالحِلمِthrough forbearance وَالجودِand generosity وَضَربِand blows of الكَردِdriving pursuit
You outstrip whoever races you before the running starts,
You haven't ceased being well-known to the chaste,
Through forbearance, generosity, and driving blows.
The delusion that clads the robes of glory,
ماnot زِلتَyou ceased مَعروفاًrenowned مَعَamong الأَرَدِّthe formidable
أَغَرَّradiant لَبّاساًwearing ثِيابَthe garments of المَجدِglory
You have ever been renowned among the formidable,
I had none but love for you,
Radiant, wearing the garments of glory.
Then praise like the scent of roses,
ماnot كانَthere was مِنّيfrom me لَكَto you غَيرُother than الوُدِّaffection
ثُمَّthen ثَناءٌpraise مِثلُlike ريحِthe fragrance of الوَردِroses
From me to you there has been nothing but affection,
I wove it in prose with expertise,
Then praise like the fragrance of roses.
So wear my composition without tyranny,
نَسَجتُهُI wove it فيinto المُحكَماتِwell-wrought verses النَدِّincense
فَاِلبَسso wear طِرازيmy embroidery غَيرَnot مُستَبَدِّclaiming exclusively
I wove it into well-wrought verses, fragrant as incense.
By Allah your days are in Preparation,
So wear my embroidery, not claiming it exclusively.
Then Qahtan's sons, then slaves,
لِلَّهِto God belong أَيّامُكَyour days فيamong مَعَدِّMa'add
ثُمَّthen بَنيthe sons of قَحطانَQahtan ثُمَّthen عَبدِ'Abd
God be praised for your days among Ma'add,
A day at Dhi Subay'a during the war,
Then the sons of Qahtan, then 'Abd:
And in it you entrusted the land of India,
يَوماًa day بِذيat Dhu صُبيَةَSubya عِندَat الحَدِّthe frontier
وَعِندَهُand there اِستَودَعتَyou entrusted أَرضَthe land of الهِندِIndia
A day at Dhu Subya, by the frontier,
With approximators, distanciators, and shields,
And there you entrusted the land of India,
When the youth is tested with them, they do not fail,
بِالمُقرِباتِwith near-bringing steeds المُبعِداتِfar-reaching الجُردِsleek
إِذاif الفَتىthe young man أَكدىfaltered بِهاon them لَمnot تُكدِthey faltered
With sleek steeds, bringing near and carrying far.
They unite matters and affairs you lead,
When a youth faltered on them, they did not falter.
And the wise son when he came to you confused,
تُلحِمُyou weave the weft of أَمراًan affair وَأُموراًand affairs تُسديyou set their warp
وَاِبنُand the son of حَكيمٍHakim إِذwhen أَتاكَhe came to you يَرديgalloping
You weave one affair's weft and set up others' warp.
In the inverted successive count,
And Ibn Hakim, when he came galloping against you,
He went with a limit and attacked with a limit,
فيamid العَدَدِthe numbers المُعلَنكِسِthe massed الأَعَدِّthe best-prepared
راحَhe went out بِحَدٍّwith fierceness وَغَداand came in the morning بِحَدِّwith fierceness
Amid thronging numbers, fully equipped,
Inciting rejection like pelting pebbles,
Went out fierce and came on fierce,
Inciting Al-Lawadhie's thickets of bending,
يَحفِزُhe drives دَفّاعاًa surging host كَطَردِlike the pursuit of الصَردِthe shrike
حَفزَthe thrusting of اللاواذِيِّthe Lawadhi boatman عُبابَthe surge of المَدِّthe tide
Driving his surging host like a shrike in pursuit,
As if he is from the deep forests,
As the Lawadhi boatman thrusts through the surging tide.
Among the resting, extended, guided army,
كَأَنَّهُas though he مِنfrom غُلَواءِthe headlong rush of الجُردِsleek horses
فيin العَسكَرِthe army المُسلَنطِحِthe sprawling المُقوَدِّthe elongated
As though, in the headlong rush of sleek horses,
Deaf who does not hear the voice of thunder,
Within the sprawling, elongated army,
You defeated him with your preparedness,
أَصَمُّdeaf لاnot يَسمَعُhe hears صَوتَthe voice of الرَعدِthunder
حَبَيتَهُyou bestowed upon him بِحَتفِهِhis doom المُعَدِّthe prepared
He were deaf, unable to hear the thunder's voice.
After sincere stabs and skinning,
You bestowed upon him his prepared doom,
So he collapsed like a leaning mountain,
بَعدَafter طِعانٍlance-thrusting صادِقٍtrue وَجَلدِand sword-blows
فَاِنهَدَّso he collapsed مِثلَlike الجَبَلِthe mountain المُنهَدِّthe collapsing
After true lance-thrusts and sword-blows.
And it cracked open from a most vicious lion,
So he collapsed like a collapsing mountain.
And from tigers around it and lions,
وَاِنفَرَجَتand it parted عَنto reveal أَسَدٍa lion أَلَدِّfiercely contentious
وَعَنand to reveal نُمورٍtigers حَولَهُaround him وَأُسدِand lions
And the host parted to reveal a fiercely contending lion,
Overthrown like the overthrown beetles,
And tigers around him, and lions,
Away! And do not inherit from them from afar!
صَرعىfallen كَصَرعىlike those felled by الخَندَريسِold wine المُردِthe deadly
بُعداًperdition وَلاand do not تَرثِpity لَهُمthem مِنon account of بُعدِperdition
Fallen like those felled by deadly old wine.
Each person is hostage to what he leads to,
Away with them! Do not pity their ruin.
And many a crowned noble honored,
كُلَّevery اِمرِئٍperson رَهنٌis held in pledge بِماby what يُؤَدّيhe does
وَرُبَّand many a ذيpossessor of تاجٍa crown كَريمِnoble المَجدِin glory
Every person is held in pledge by what he does.
Like the family of Kisra and the family of Burd,
And many a wearer of a crown, of noble glory,
Fell short, deviating from the path of righteousness,
كَآلِlike the house of كِسرىKhusrau وَكَآلِand like the house of بُردِBurd
أَنكَبَcrooked جافٍturning aside عَنfrom طَريقِthe path of الرُشدِright guidance
Like the house of Khusrau and the house of Burd,
So you detached him from his money and children.
Crooked, swerving from the path of right:
O daughter of the most eloquent of Bani Urnud!
فَصَلتَهُyou severed him عَنfrom مالِهِhis wealth وَالوُلدِand his children
ياO بِنتَdaughter of أَفصىAfsa مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of العُرُندِal-Urund
You cut him off from his wealth and children.
Tell Abd Al-Qais if you do not find
O daughter of Afsa, of the sons of al-Urund,
Do not rejoice in the most severe adversity,
قوليsay لِعَبدِto 'Abd القَيسِal-Qays إِنif لَمnot تُجدِyou avail
لاdo not تَفرَحيrejoice بِالجَلَبِin the mustering الأَشَدِّthe mightiest
Say to 'Abd al-Qays, though your words may not avail:
So wait for the aftermath after the affliction.
Do not rejoice in your mighty mustering.
It is equal, one who invades and one in the grave,
فَاِنتَظِريso await عُقبَةَ'Uqba بَعدَafter الوَخدِthe swift march
سِيّانَalike مَنwhoever يَغزوwages war وَمَنand whoever فيis in اللَحدِthe grave
Await 'Uqba after his swift march.
Time has come to you with a matter, so comply,
Those who wage war and those in the grave are alike.
With the aftermath of the troublemaker, then the glorious,
قَدalready جاءَكِcame to you الدَهرُtime بِأَمرٍwith a matter إِدِّterrible
بِعُقبَةَwith 'Uqba المِشغَبِthe stirrer of strife ثُمَّthen المُجديthe benefactor
Time has brought you a terrible thing:
He waves his sharpest sword,
'Uqba, the stirrer of strife, then the benefactor,
Among a horde like the advancing darkness,
يَهُزُّhe brandishes أَعلىthe tip of سَيفِهِhis sword الأَحَدِّthe keenest
فيwithin جَحفَلٍan army كَالعارِضِlike the storm-cloud المُسوَدِّthe dark
Brandishing the tip of his keenest sword,
Splitting the back of the solid, barren land,
Within an army like a dark storm-cloud,
With the standards in the incised sarad,
يَشُقُّhe cleaves مَتنَthe surface of الصَحصَحانِthe vast plain الجَردِthe bare
بِالعَلَمَينِwith the two banners فيamid الحَديدِiron السَردِlinked together
Cleaving the surface of the vast, bare plain,
And all the roaring squadrons of slaughter,
With two banners amid linked iron armor,
In his armor, and death above the armor,
وَكُلِّand every جَيّاشِsurging at العَشاياevenings نَهدِhigh-chested steed
فيin لِبدِهِits saddle-pad وَالمَوتُand death فَوقَabove اللِبدِthe saddle-pad
And every high-chested steed, surging at evening,
In its saddle-pad, with death above the pad.
