O people, help me with the remembered beloved,
O people who commemorate the beloved
And a phantom that visited me before daybreak.
And whose imagination visited me before dawn

The moon of night traveled in a sleeveless gown,
The moon of the night set out speckled
Appearing before me—welcome to the moon!
Heading towards me, so welcome O moon

O son of Musa, do not blame me for love,
O son of Moses, do not blame me for passion
And give me wine mixed with cool, limpid water.
And quench my soul with a slim-waisted cup

رُبَّماsometimes أَهدىbrought لَكَto you الحَينَdoom النَظَرa look
A glance bound my soul to Salma;
My soul is attached with a glance on my ladder
Sometimes a look brings you doom.
Perhaps it would bring you a gift of sight

Experience some of that for my sake, or do not reproach me;
So bring me news from her, or do not blame me
Longing has taken my heart up and down.
Passion has ascended in my heart and descended

لَوif بِهِin him ماwhat بيis in me مِنَof الحُبِّlove عَذرwould excuse
And one whose heart is free from love's sickness
A sane heart is excused for the illness of love
Would excuse me if he felt the love I feel.
If I did not have this love, I would have no excuse

Tell whoever is jealous of us in love:
Tell whoever envies us in passion
Look into what we conceal, then be jealous.
Contemplate the secret between us, then be deluded

And a friend who scolds, though I pay him no heed,
And a brother who complains yet I do not care for him
Milked my love for her today, and it flowed.
My love for her has milked affection today
مَرحَباًwelcome! وَاللَهِby God لاdo not أَكتُمُهُconceal it

Welcome! By God, I do not conceal it:
Welcome - by God I will not hide it
My love is public, not kept secret.
My love is public, it is no secret

I have not visited Salma, nor has she called on us,
I did not visit Salma, and she did not wear a veil from us
Except in dreams of her: put your eye to sleep, and you will be visited.
Except seeing her - my eyes fell asleep
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said أَناI فيin عُلِّيَّةٍan upper chamber

Then she said: I am in an upper chamber;
Then she said, I am in seclusion
The watcher stays awake, and you are well known;
The eyes are sleepless while you are renowned

He pays heed only to those he knows,
None care except those who know you
And I see that people leave their mark on you.
And I see people have traces of you

إِنَّindeed حُلوَthe sweetness of العَيشِlife مَحفوفٌis surrounded بِمُرby bitterness
So force your soul to bear what it dislikes;
So carry your soul through what it dislikes
The sweetness of life is surrounded by bitterness.
The sweetness of life is mixed with bitterness

And when a matter twists from its proper course,
And if the matter becomes twisted
Accept what you are given of it, and settle.
Be content with what you were given and settle

Indeed, I suffered from that woman's cruelty—
And indeed I have suffered from the injustice of one
A marvel of the age—and from the cup of intoxication.
The days were amazed by her, and from the cup of nectar
فَاِنقَضىso ended ذاكَthat حَميداًpraiseworthy عَهدُهُits time

وَحَسَرتُand I stripped اللَهوَamusement عَنّيfrom myself فَاِنحَسَرso it fell away
Then that ended, its days praiseworthy,
So that virtuous time of hers has passed
And I stripped amusement from myself, and it fell away.
And I pushed frivolity away from me, so it slid
وَلَقَدand indeed قُلتُI said لِزَورٍto a visitor زارَنيwho visited me

Indeed, I said to a visitor who came to me,
And indeed I said to one who visited me
After he had turned away for a while and deserted me:
After shunning me for a time and avoiding me

Time has bestowed old age upon my youth;
Fate gave me my youth as a gift
Such is time, with its sweetness and evil.
And so is fate, with sweetness and harm

Many a day of yours was renowned and radiant.
Many a glorious day awaits you

He patched up life, so rejoice in wealth—
It mended life, so rejoice in fortune
Uqba, who shelters you from wretched living.
A neighbor’s successor is an unknown life

And a prince, to whom the leaders of men
And a leader whom the eminent people have
Are servants, his commands carried out among them.
Underlings who execute whatever he commands

I visited him one day and he brought me near
And favored me with full moons and radiant beauties.
And gifted me with carpets and necklaces

And to a young man of refined taste I said:
And to a well-mannered youth I said
Adorn a generous man with verse, then rest.
Make the poetry noble then recite

It does not please al-Habash that you praise him,
The Abyssinians do not like you to praise them
For fear of generosity; al-Habash is no noble man.
Fearing good deeds - the Abyssinians are no nobles
يَشتَهيdesires الحَمدَpraise وَلاand does not يَفعَلُهُdo it

He desires praise but does nothing to earn it;
He desires praise but does not do it
So he has lessons to learn from this and that.
So he has a lesson from this and a lesson from that

And Ajrad came forward, threatening me,
And a little hyena threatened me
Like one who rouses a lion at night, unaware.
Like a lion rouser at night without knowing

He longs for me; yet if I meet him,
He wishes me dead and if I meet him
He fears my advance upon him and crumples.
He fears my attack so he retreats

Like a virgin who longs for intercourse,
A virgin's nature desires marriage
Yet fears it and will not risk danger.
Yet fears it, so there are no grave sins

From Banu Nihya; a father forbade him—
A father from the Bani Nahya tribe prohibited him
Crooked-sworded, bitter aloe upon a wound.
The sword's edge is crippled at the wound

He wears out blame upon his shoulders,
Blame recoils over its shoulders
And praise on him looks like a blemish.
And you see praise upon it is lame

He held me back from him, when I had faced him—
He turned me away though I confronted him
Radiant Uqba, the crusher of stone.
The obstacle was the flowering jujube's pebbly ground

So I demurred before one who asked leave,
So I refused to grant permission
Radiant on the pulpit, in ample robes,
To a bright pulpit's flowing robes

From fear, or longing for his affection:
In awe or lust for his affection
If he wishes, he can sweeten and embitter.
He can if he wishes make it sweet or bitter

A king who is gentle when you treat him gently,
A king whom if you treat him gently
And harsh when you deal harshly with him.
Things go smoothly, but if you make it hard, then hardship

That unveiled itself as war and appeared ablaze.
Who unleashed war and ignited flames

When the wind dries up and eyes stare wide.
When the wind dried and sight split

And a noble Qahtani in his enclosure
Sound in judgment, generous as a refuge.
Balanced in reason, noble when pressed

Resolute in approaching water, praised in departing.
Resolute in friendship, praised is his chest

And a generous man, lavish when he sets out at dawn;
And a generous, lavish man when he marched forth
The wind flags, yet evening finds him unflagging.
The winds calm and he rests when it rests

If his obtainer flowed in the rock surface
With a parched surface, the stone would be drenched.
It would have soaked the rock

Uqba, you are the man through whom none suffers—
You are a man whom one is not wretched through
Neither an absent one among us nor one nearby and present.
Absent from us and not one who is present

You came to us dying, and revived generosity;
You came to us lost and revived joy
So praise is yours for a dead thing brought to life.
So praise be to you for one dead and buried

Do not fear my betrayal if I am absent
A fate arising among the decrees of fate.
Fate interjects among some fates

It is I who gives you the utmost of my soul
And, if you grant him good, he is grateful.
And if you entrust me with good, I will be grateful

Arriving early with rain on a fortunate day.
That sprouted on a fortunate day of rain

Each day, I hold a further favor of yours,
Each day for you I have a special favor

It is time for us to be watered by the rain,
We wished for rain to be given drink by it
Or to see its trace in our valley.
Or to see a trace of it in our valley
وَلَقَدand indeed كُنّاwe had been عَرَتناbefallen us جَفوَةٌneglect

Indeed, we had been struck by neglect,
We were a people whom dryness had withered
That devoured our joint bones and the bases of our necks.
Eroding our cattle and palaces
إِنَّماonly كُنّاwe were كَأَرضٍlike a land مَيتَةٍdead

We were only like a dead land,
We were but like dead land
With nothing in it for a pasture-scout to hope for.
In which there is no expectancy for the herder
فَحَييناso we lived again بِكَthrough you إِذwhen وُلّيتَناyou were appointed over us

So we lived again through you when you were appointed over us,
You revived us when you took charge of us
Just as the earth comes to life through rain.
And so does the land come alive through rain
