ياO رَحمَةَmercy اللَهِof God حُلّيcome dwell فيin مَنازِلِناour homes
وَجاوِريناand be our neighbor فَدَتكِmay it ransom you النَفسُthe soul مِنas جارِa neighbor
O mercy of God, dwell in our homes,
And be our neighbor—may my soul ransom a neighbor like you!
أَنتِyou المُنىwishes وَحَديثُand the discourse of النَفسِthe soul خالِيَةًwhen alone
وَمُنتَهىand the ultimate goal of حاجَتيmy need القُصوىutmost وَأَوطاريand my desires
You are my wishes and my soul's discourse in solitude,
And the ultimate goal of my deepest need and my desires.
أَرضىI am more content بِقُربِكِwith your nearness مِنthan مالٍwealth وَمِنand than سَكَنٍa home
وَمِنand than نَعيميmy pleasures وَمِنand than رَهطيmy clan وَزُوّاريand my visitors
I am happier with your nearness than with wealth or a home,
Or with my pleasures, my clan, or my visitors.
وَقُلتُand I said لَمّاwhen رَأَيتُI saw الحُبَّlove يَتبَعُنيpursuing me
وَأَنتِwhile you فيin راحَةٍease مِنfrom هَمِّيَmy grief الساريnight-roaming
And I said, when I saw love pursuing me,
While you were at ease, free of my night-roaming grief:
لَيتَif only المَناياdeath دَعَتنيcalled me فَاِستَجَبتُso I answered لَهاto it
وَكُنتُand I was مِمَّنamong those whose تُواتيaccords with دارُهاher dwelling داريmy dwelling
If only death had called me, and I had answered it,
And I had been one whose dwelling lay beside hers.
لَولاwere it not for هَواكِlove of you أَبَتrefused نَفسيmy soul مَناعِمَهاits delights
مِنfrom كُلِّevery مَخطوطَةِslender in المَتنَينِboth flanks مِعطارِrichly perfumed
Were it not for love of you, my soul would spurn its delights,
From every slender-flanked, richly perfumed woman,
حَوراءُwide, dark-eyed كَالريمِlike a white gazelle أَعلاهاher upper body إِذاwhen خَرَجَتshe comes out
تَهتَزُّshe sways فيupon كَفَلٍa rump كَالدِعصِlike a sand mound مَرمارِquivering
Dark-eyed, whose upper body is like a white gazelle's when she steps out,
Swaying upon a quivering rump like a mound of sand.
ياO رَحمَةَmercy اللَهِof God حُلّيcome dwell غَيرَnot صاغِرَةٍhumbled
عَلىwith حَزينٍa sorrowing man بِدارِin the abode of الحُبِّlove مَرّارِoften passing through
O mercy of God, come dwell without abasement
With a sorrowing man who often visits love's abode.
قَدindeed رابَهُtroubled him مِنfrom صَديقٍa friend كانَhe used to يَأمَلُهُhope in him
صُبحٌa dawn وَبادَرَهُand hastened to confront him قَومٌa group بِإِنكارِwith rejection
What troubled him, from a friend in whom he had hoped,
Was a dawn; and a group hastened to reject him.
كَأَنَّنيas though I مِنfrom عَناءِthe torment of الحُبِّlove فيin سِنَةٍa doze
مُطَرَّحٌcast aside بَينَbetween إِقبالٍdrawing near وَإِدبارِand turning away
It is as though, from love's torment, I were drowsing,
Cast aside between approach and withdrawal.
إِنّيindeed I بِماbecause of what اِحتَمَلَتhas borne عَينيmy eye حَوائِجَكُمyour needs
وَاِستَحلَتِand found sweet العَينُthe eye مِنّيfrom me دَمعُهاits tears جاريflowing
Indeed, because my eye has borne your needs,
And found them sweet, its tears keep streaming from me.
أَبيتُI spend the night وَالحِبُّand the beloved فيin سَمعيmy hearing وَفيand in بَصَريmy sight
وَفيand in لِسانيmy tongue وَأَطرافيand my limbs وَآثاريand my traces
I spend the night with my beloved in my hearing and my sight,
And on my tongue, in my limbs, and in the traces I leave.
كَأَنَّماas though بِتُّI spent the night مَقروناًbound بِساحِرَةٍto a sorceress
كانَتshe was عَلىupon القَلبِthe heart تَمريهِmilking it بِأظفارِwith fingernails
As though I had spent the night bound to a sorceress,
Who kept milking my heart with her fingernails.
أَهيمُI wander distraught مِمّاfrom what بِقَلبيis in my heart مِنof صَبابَتِهِits ardent longing
وَبِالمدامِعِand with tears مِنfrom شَوقيmy longing وَتَذكاريand my remembrance
I wander distraught from the ardor within my heart,
And in tears, from my longing and remembrance.
لاnot أَذكُرُI remember الجَنَّةَParadise المَغبوطَenvied for good fortune ساكِنُهاits inhabitant
وَقَدand indeed نَسيتُI have forgotten وَعيدَthe threat of اللَهِGod بِالنارِof the Fire
I do not think of Paradise, whose dwellers are envied,
And I have forgotten God's threat of the Fire.
كَأَنَّنيas though I بِكِbecause of you إِذاwhen تَمشينَyou walk راضِيَةًcontented
أَمشيI walk عَلىon جَمرَةٍa live coal أَوor حَدِّthe edge of مِنشارِa saw
Because of you, when you walk contentedly, it is as though
I walk on a live coal or the edge of a saw.
أَشُكُّI doubt فيconcerning الناسِpeople ماwhat قالَتthey said وَماand what صَنَعَتthey did
وَلاand not أَشُكُّI doubt بِسُقمٍof an illness داخِلٍinward بارِwasting
I doubt what people have said and what they have done,
Yet I have no doubt of the wasting sickness within.
حَتّىuntil مَتىwhen أَناI مَشغولٌabsorbed بِحُبِّكُمُin love for you
مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الحُبِّlove أَوor أَهذيI rave بِأَشعاريin my verses
How long must I remain absorbed in love for you,
From love's intensity—or rave in my verses?
كَأَنَّas though نَفسيmy soul بِماwith what زادَتit gained وَماand what نَقَصَتit lost
شَيءٌa thing سِوىother than النَفسِthe soul لَمnot يُخلَقwas created بِمِقدارِaccording to measure
As though my soul, in all it gains and loses,
Were something other than a soul, not fashioned to a measure;
إِلّاexcept تَغَوُّلَshape-shifting أَمثالٍof likenesses تَكُنmay become مَثَلاًa byword
لِكُلِّfor every مُستَمِعٍlistener مِنكُمamong you وَنَظّارِand observer
Only shape-shifting likenesses that become a byword
For every listener among you and every watcher.
وَمَعشَرٍand a group جَعَلواthey made حُبّيmy love of زِيارَتَكُمvisiting you
عاراًa disgrace عَليَّupon me وَماand not بِالحُبِّin love مِنany عارِdisgrace
And a group made my love of visiting you
A disgrace to me—yet there is no disgrace in love.
قالواthey said ذَواتُwomen possessing الغِنىwealth خَيرٌbetter فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them
بِرَحمَةِwith the mercy of اللَهِGod أَستَغنيI have enough وَأَوطاريand my desires
They said, “Women of wealth are better”; I said to them:
“God's mercy is wealth enough for me and my desires.”
أَغنَيتُهُمI enriched them بِمَزيدٍwith an increase فيin مَساءَتِهِمtheir vexation
وَكُنتُand I was فيماconcerning what اِبتَغَواthey sought مِنin حُبِّdesire for إِقصارىmy desisting
I enriched them with still greater vexation,
And, in their wish that I should desist, I was
كَقائِلٍlike one saying إِذwhen لَحىreproached فيconcerning الخَمرِwine عاذِلُهُhis censurer
لَأَشرَبَنَّI will certainly drink وَلَوeven if كَأساًa cup بِدينارِfor a dinar
Like one who said, when his critic reproached him over wine:
“I shall surely drink, even at a dinar a cup!”
