    O love, long have we yearned to visit you,

    though you are the nearest neighbors in the town.

    لَو كُنتِ تَشفينَني مِن داخِلِ الكَمَدِ

    You have made me ill, while the cure for love lies with you;

    if only you would heal me of the sorrow deep within.

    Love, to me, has no equal, even if you offered us

    all that people amass of wealth and children.

    وَفي غَدٍ قَد أَرَجّيهِ وَبَعدَ غَدِ

    I hope for your favor today, but it fails me;

    and tomorrow I may hope for it, and the day after.

    And you, heedless of what I suffer for you,

    are absorbed in perfume, silken clothing, and your hair.

    وَفي اِكتِحالٍ بِكُم شافٍ مِنَ الرَمَدِ

    I spend the night sore-eyed unless I use you as kohl;

    and in using you as kohl lies a cure for sore eyes.

    And every lover will seek healing through his beloved,

    whether she leads him astray or leads him to right guidance.

    I swear by your life, O Abbad—so listen—

    if I sought to go beyond this love, I could not increase it.

    It is as though my heart, when the memory of you arises,

    were bound in knots by the magic of Harut or Marut.

    Never has the wind blown from the direction of your land

    without my feeling its coolness upon my liver.

    Nor have I sought another woman for secret intimacy

    without finding a phantom of you lying in wait.

    Is there, then, a reward for this from your affection—

    my heart terror-stricken by sorrows and sleeplessness—

    to gladden my heart? Yet you grow harsher toward me.

    That is not right, given what I hope for from you.

    Have scruples in love, if you are a believer

    in God, about killing a soul without blood-retribution.

    If you fear any sharing in my love for you,

    then it has indeed taken firm hold between the soul and the body.
