خَليلَيَّmy two friends غُضّاpause, you two ساعَةًa while وَاِرحَلاand depart, you two بَرداin the cool
وَزوراand visit, you two فَتىًa youth يَكفيكُماsuffices you both حَسَباًin noble lineage إِدّاmighty
My two friends, pause a while and depart in the cool,
And visit a youth whose mighty lineage suffices you both:
سَفيحَSafīḥ بنَson of عَمروʿAmr لاno بَلrather وَليدُهُhis offspring
وَإِنand when ذُكِرَis mentioned المَعروفُkindness أَصغىhe inclined لَهُtoward it خَدّاa cheek
Safīḥ son of ʿAmr—no, rather his offspring.
And when kindness is mentioned, he inclines his cheek toward it.
أَرىI see الهَمَّcare قَدalready أَلقىhas laid عَلَيَّupon me جِرانَهُits camel-neck
حَديثاًrecently وَبَعضُand some الهَمِّcare يَنتَهِكُwears away الجَلداfortitude
I see care has laid its neck upon me
Of late—and some care wears away fortitude.
فَزوراso visit, you two سَفيحاًSafīḥ أَوor أَشيراpoint, you two بِمِثلِهِto someone like him
وَأَنّىand where بِأَمثالِto find the likes of الفُراتِthe Euphrates إِذاwhen مَدّاit swells
So visit Safīḥ, or point out his like.
And where are the likes of the Euphrates when it swells?
دَعاسِبُهُhis sturdy mounts (uncertain) أَودُthe burden of (uncertain) الجِيادِnoble steeds عَلىdespite الوَجاhoof-soreness
وَهَزَّand he brandished المَناياdeaths فيin مَناصِلِهِhis blades رُبداdusky
His sturdy mounts, the burden of noble steeds despite sore hooves [wording unclear].
And he brandished dusky deaths within his blades.
فَلَمso not يَبقَremained مِمَّنof those who يَشتَريbuy الحَمدَpraise بِالنَدىwith generosity
خَلاexcept ماemphatic particle سَفيحٍSafīḥ لاmay not رَأَيناwe see لَهُof him فَقداa loss
None remained of those who buy praise with generosity,
Except Safīḥ—may we never witness his loss.
إِذاwhen لَبِسَhe donned الماذِيَّfine mail يَومَon a day of كَريهَةٍbattle

When he dons fine mail on a day of battle,
And girds himself, urging the horses onward or leading them sleek-coated,
رَأَيتَyou saw إِباءَthe unbending pride of المُلكِkingship فَوقَabove جَبينِهِhis brow
يَهُزُّhe brandishes المَناياdeaths وَالهِرَقلِيَّةَand Heraclian coins النَقداready coin
You see the unbending pride of kingship above his brow.
He brandishes death and ready Heraclian coin.
يَهُزُّhe waves يَداًa hand لِلحَمدِfor praise طالَتhas grown long وَهَزَّهُand stirred him
نَدىًgenerosity مِثلُlike طَيّارِthe rushing current of الفُراتِthe Euphrates إِذاwhen جَدّاit runs strong
He waves a hand grown long for praise, and he is stirred
By bounty like the Euphrates' rushing flood when it runs strong.
جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod عَنon behalf of قَوميmy people سَفيحاًSafīḥ كَرامَةًwith honor

May God reward Safīḥ with honor on behalf of my people,
And on behalf of a man who offers him praise and affection.

Whenever Safīḥ goes forth in kingship, evening and morning,
His two palms flow with gold for the people—or good fortune.

He rises to meet the needs of delegations, and sometimes
Boldly takes on the greatest task and with it kindles a fire-stick.
وَرَكّابُand a frequent mounter of أَعوادِthe timbers of المَنابِرِthe pulpits لاnot يَنيflags
خَليفَةَa deputy of مُلكٍa king لِلصَّعاليكِfor the destitute أَوor حَدّاa barrier
And he repeatedly mounts the wooden pulpits, never flagging,
A king's deputy for the destitute—or a barrier.
بِناwe have حاجَةٌa need أَنتَyou اِبنُson of عَمروٍʿAmr طَبيبُهاits physician

We have a need; you, son of ʿAmr, are its physician.
So deal fairly with a brother who has devoted his poems to you as a gift.
خُلِقتَyou were created سَماءًa sky لِلعُفاةِfor seekers of bounty غَزيرَةًrain-rich
وَمِفتاحَand a key to أَبوابِthe doors of المُهِمِّpressing need إِذاwhen اِمتَدّاit drags on
You were created a rain-rich sky for seekers of bounty,
And a key to the doors of pressing need when it drags on.
وَكَوكَبِand many a star of قَومٍa people كانَhad been نَحساًill-omened عَلَيهِمُfor them
زَماناًfor a time فَلَمّاthen when قُمتَyou arose أَطلَعتَهُyou made it rise سَعداauspicious
And many a people's star had been ill-omened for them
For a time; when you arose, you made it rise auspicious.
وَخُطَّةِand many a plan of حَزمٍresolve قَدindeed كَشَفتَyou averted بِهاwith it الرَدىdeath

And many a resolute plan with which you averted death,
And many a chieftain's head you sent with a delegation.
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌa man مِنfrom وائِلٍWāʾil وَسَطَin the midst of النَدىgenerosity
كَفَيتَyou spared us بِهِwith it مَنwhoever كانَwas نائِلُهُhis giving جَعداmeager
And you are a man of Wāʾil, at generosity's very heart;
With it you have spared us those whose giving was meager.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you تَنويsetting your sights on الهِندَIndia بِالبيضِwith bright swords وَالقَناand spears

I saw you setting your sights on India with bright blades and spears,
And with sleek horses rearing against their reins.
فَسِرso march مُصحَباًaccompanied بِالنَصرِby victory فيamid مُحزَئِلَّةٍa massed host

تَهُزُّyou brandish القَناthe spears حَتّىuntil تَروعَyou terrify بِهاwith them الهِنداIndia
So march, attended by victory, amid a massed host,
Brandishing spears until you terrify India with them,
وَحَتّىand until تَضُمَّyou take الساحِلَينَthe two coasts كِلَيهِماboth of them

And until you take both coasts, the two together,
As captives, like feast-day sheep now gathered together.
فَتىa youth of البَأسِvalor لاnot يَلقاهُdoes one meet him إِلاّexcept مَعَwith النَدىgenerosity

مُهيناًholding cheap لِحُرِّthe choicest of المالِwealth أَوor ضارِباًstriking كَرداa neck
A youth of valor, never met save in generosity's company,
Holding choice wealth cheap, or striking a neck.
أَقولُI say وَقَدwhile already راحَmoved off اللِواءُthe banner لِعامِرٍto ʿĀmir

I say to ʿĀmir, as the banner moves off,
And ʿAbd: Halt, you two; let us entrust a charge to a king.
لَعَلَّperhaps الَّتيthat which قُلِّدتَهاyou were entrusted with it قَرمَO champion of وائِلٍWāʾil

Perhaps what was entrusted to you, O champion of Wāʾil,
Will grant us from its bounty a gift to be offered.
قَعيدَكَI adjure you أَنthat يَنسىshould forget اِمرُؤٌa man أَنتَyou هَمُّهُhis concern

I adjure you: can a man forget, when you are his concern?
Care gleams over him, never leaving his mind.
