Is it because of misfortunes and familiar passion

that the carefree man slept, while I find no sleep?

And I answer whoever asks, 'How are you?' with 'Well,'

until I have grown weary, and my sickbed visitors have tired of me.

And my reproacher's words, when I had seen her:

'Indeed, al-Muraʿʿath, the Earringed One, departs at evening or morning.'

From love of a beauty whose coquetry struck

my heart; it assailed me again, as though I lay upon a wooden bier.

I truly fear that it may be my death,

and love summons a young man to corruption,

until you see me concealing no desire,

and through my love for ʿUbayd I forgot my hereafter.

She stole your heart the day I went away, and left

a body I dwell beside, without a heart.

A tender liver swayed him toward you,

and longing visits him by night with sleeplessness.

Do not abandon him, ʿUbayda, and be moderate:

My soul be your ransom, and my newly gained and inherited wealth.
