وَوَدَّعتُ نُعمى بِالسَلامِ وَبِالهَجرِ
I held myself above Fihr and Fihr's two female neighbors,
I turned away from Fahr and his two neighbors
And bade Nu‘ma farewell with peace and estrangement.
And bade farewell to Nu'aima in peace and alienation
وَقالَتand she said سُلَيمىSulayma فيكَin you عَنّاtoward us تَثاقُلٌreluctance

مَحَلُّكَ ناءٍ وَالزِيارَةُ عَن غَفرِ
Sulayma said: There is reluctance in you toward us;
Sulaima said, your burden on us has become heavy
Your dwelling is distant, and your visits come at long intervals.
Your abode is to come and go, not settle down
أَخيmy brother فيin الهَوىlove ماليwhy do I أَراكَsee you هَجَرتَناyou have abandoned us

My brother in love, why do I see you abandoning us,
My brother in love, why do I see you shunning us
Though you once followed us through hardship and ease?
When you used to accompany us in hardship and ease?
صُدودُكَyour turning away عَنّاfrom us غَيرُnot ناءٍfar away لِطِيَّةٍon a journey

You shun us, though not far away on some journey,
Your aloofness from us is not out of hatred
And my question is neither strange nor unheard-of.
Nor is my question strange or absurd

Be like a brother who meets a brother and freely shares
So be like a brother who meets his brother
Conversations neither whispered nor proclaimed aloud.
And converses openly, no secrets or pretense
رَأَيتُكَI saw you قَدalready شَمَّرتَyou girded yourself تَشميرَthe girding of باسِلٍa warrior

وَقَد كُنتَ ذَيّالَ السَرابيلِ وَالأُزرِ
I see you have girded yourself like a warrior,
I saw you attired like a knight ready for battle
Though once you trailed your tunics and waist-wraps.
When you used to be relaxed, in shirt and robe
تَطَرَّفُyou roam بِالرَوحاءِin al-Rawha’ صَرّامَa habitual severer of خُلَّةٍan attachment

وَوَصّالَ أُخرى ما يُقيمُ عَلى أَمرِ
You roamed al-Rawha’, quick to sever one attachment,
Brandishing a sharp sword in your right hand
And quick to renew another, never keeping to one course,
While holding another to settle affairs as they come
وَرَكّابَand a constant rider of أَفراسِthe horses of الصَبابَةِpassionate longing وَالصِباand youthful folly

جَرَت حِجَجاً ثُمَّ اِستَقَرَّت فَما تَجري
A constant rider of the horses of longing and youthful folly.
Riding the steeds of youth and early manhood
They ran for years, then settled, and now run no more.
That raced wildly before settling down
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her إِذwhen وُقِّفَتthey were halted فيin سُروجِهاtheir saddles

بِعاقِبَةٍ أَقرو الحَديثَ وَلا أَمري
I told her, when they were halted in their saddles:
So I said to them when they were halted in their trappings
I trace the tale to its outcome, and do not dispute it.
Speak gently and do not race ahead

Al-Mahdi turned her face aside the day I met her,
Al-Mahdi one day reined them in
When henna had adorned her ten reedlike fingers.
When henna adorned them in the meadows

Now they are ridden only into battle,
So they would only be ridden to battle
And I am neither disparaged nor disparage others.
While I would no longer be visited or visit

وَزَورَةِ أَملاكٍ أَشُدُّ لَها أَزري
I have grown reluctant, except where I gain a benefaction,
I have become too heavy except for a hand I can grasp
Or to visit kings, for which I gird my loins.
Or the visit of a dear friend who I hold so dear

Prepare yourself, Sulayma, to accept this, or replace me
Sulaima, be content with me or change
With my equal among men—if you find a young man of my worth.
My fate if you find a man of my fate

The Commander of the Faithful forbade me, and down knelt
The Commander of the Faithful prohibited me
The mounts of youthful folly, until I heeded restraint.
So the colts were blessed till I came to my senses

He freed me from the burden of seventy years of sin—
And rescued me from the burden of seventy pilgrimages
A Hashimite young man who shudders at sin.
A Hashimite youth averse to burdens

Do not marvel at one emerging from error,
So do not wonder at one who emerges from misguidance
Resolved on right guidance; one affair may interrupt another.
With good intentions, matters can become confused

This is the time I have embarked on piety
And my night-visiting cares have died and no longer prowl.
And my disturbing thoughts of the night have died out

I have buried my passion alive, so I shall not visit
Sulayma or Safra’, as long as the turtledove coos.
Sulaima or Safraa, however long the moon shines

Turn aside now: I no longer pursue love; my obstinacy has ended.
Now I am weary, my obstinacy has ended
Love has died, and my drunkenness has lifted from my head.
Passion has died and my intoxication has lifted

The gazelle-like beauties have my farewell; how often
Convey my greetings to the coquettish girls
I dallied with them in the shade of a cherished, radiant one,
I would sometimes play with in the shade of a lovely blossom

And the yellow-skinned ones scented with saffron
When adorned, like yellow Heraclean coins.
When adorned are like golden Greek maidens

A jealous, heavy-hipped woman sprang up to reproach me,
Others burdened me with reproach
Though, had she stood at my grave, she would have prayed over it.
If my grave witnessed, it would have prayed over my grave

For al-Mahdi of prayer, I relinquished her sweet saliva,
I left the prayers of Mahdi content
And honored a covenant between us, free of treachery.
And honored a pact between us, no treachery

Whenever a girlfriend turned against me
I used to fill my lap with another graceful, supple beauty.
I would replace her with another, gentle and affectionate

And one who offered herself secretly, while I had ample alternatives—
One who caresses in secret, though wine is at hand
I told her: I do not drink water with wine.
So I said to her, “I do not mix water with wine”

And were it not for Commander of Faithful Muhammad
I would have kissed her mouth, or broken my fast with her.
I would have kissed her mouth or made her my breaking of fast

By my life, I have burdened myself with a sin
And I will not add another burden upon that burden.
So I shall not increase my burden upon burden

A libertine of his people approached with advice,
And the corrupt man who came to advise me
And I disparaged him; a faultfinding lover may yet help.
I admonished - the lover can benefit one he admonishes

I say to Amr the day his cousin was absent
And words must indeed be conveyed to ‘Amr:
One must say what needs to be said to Amr

He once tried to corrupt me, so I healed him
Repeatedly—both my days were worse than fate.
Each and every day, evil upon evil

Only a freeborn woman's son can rein in the stumbling mare,
None can restrain the transgressor but the son of Hurrah
One who outstrips others with the sword's edge and understands excuses.
Foremost with the sword, excusing others

Long ago, his sandal would not have slipped in the sea.
Their slippers would not have slipped in the sea

When I saw the people's lax hearts
As they sought a sea, I did not pause beside any sea.
Inclined to a sea I did not sail upon a sea

I left passion to the weak and battled
Me to gird myself like a Haruri casting off slackness.
Girded for war, too honorable to be inactive

A chaste woman who sheds no blood or flesh
Far from complaining of fatigue, with a thick-fleshed stern—
Safe from the cries of the fleeing, bold against attacks

When spears pierce her, she is clad
With her horsemen, over neither plain nor rugged ground.
With her horsemen, not in plain or rugged terrain

With a yielding back; nothing cleaves as she cleaves.

You see the souls of men flee from her advance

Rebelling woman, you have transgressed too often
Not all that water-carrying camels fear is a clicking sound.
Not all that is feared by the outspoken merits poking

عُفاةُ النَدى مِن حَيثُ يَدري وَلا يَدري
I fastened my rope to the rope of one never left unvisited by
And hold fast to the rope of one the drizzle of clouds
Bounty-seekers, from quarters he knows and does not know.
Does not miss wherever he turns or halts

The open-handed man of the sons of al-‘Abbas calls to generosity,
The youth of Abbas calls to harmony
And becomes Duwar at evening, in residence and on the road.
Spending his evenings settled or travelling

The sons of Hashim will not drink with dirt in the cup,
The sons of Hashim do not drink from a cup
Bold warriors, sporting with dusky spears.
My tame deer, slippery with smooth round swords

They brandish solid shafts that speed toward foes,
Agitating deaf lions heading to the fray
Piercing, balanced between slenderness and bulk.
With powerful thrusts, not in plain or rugged terrain

O Commander of Faithful, I recognized you by gentleness upon us
Toward us, not for boastfulness or pride.
Not by boasting or arrogance

‘Abdullah built you a house of caliphate,
Abdullah built you a house of caliphate
Where you dwelt between the Farqad stars and the Eagle.
Where you dwelled between the departed and the preying eagle

فَرَعتَ بِها الأَملاكَ مِن وَلَدِ النَضرِ
You hold a covenant from Muhammad's bequest,
In your possession is a covenant from the trustees of Muhammad
By which you towered over the kings descended from al-Nadr.
You shepherded kingdoms from the sons of al-Nadhr
وَرِثتَyou inherited عَلِيّاً‘Ali شيمَةًa character أَريَحِيَّةًgenerous-hearted

You inherited ‘Ali's generous-hearted character,
You inherited the traits of Ali, pure Arab virtues
And upheld Ibn ‘Abbas, and were strengthened through gratitude.
And protected Ibn Abbas, aided by gratitude

You secured the inheritance of the Prophet Muhammad,
And claimed the inheritance of the Prophet Muhammad
Despite people looking on with wickedness.
Despite a people looking askance in enmity

Al-‘Abbas left you a celebrated day;
And Abbas will reserve for you a glorious day
When you traverse it in remembrance, it surpasses all telling:
When you mention him in gatherings, he shines among all gathered

His sword-fighting in defense of the Prophet,
A stalwart by the Prophet with his sword
In the valley of Hunayn, neither slack nor inexperienced.
At Hunayn unfailing and unfaltering

رُداعُ عَروسٍ بِالذِراعَينِ وَالنَحرِ
As though the people's blood, the day he met them,
As if the people's blood that day of meeting him
Were a bride's saffron stains on her arms and upper chest.
Was the train of a bride's dress and bosom
عَشِيَّةَon the evening when يَدعوhe calls المُسلِمينَthe Muslims بِصَوتِهِwith his voice

That evening, he called the Muslims with his voice,
In the evening he calls the Muslims with his voice
When they had fled, and he raised his voice above a band of men.
And they flock once hearing his voice from afar
وَأَنتَand you اِمرُؤٌare a man تَهويhasten إِلَيكَto you قُلوبَناour hearts

You are a man toward whom our hearts hasten,
You are a leader whom our hearts and minds incline to
And our minds, from fear on the day of tumult.
On the day of panic and confusion

You examined the matter and came to know
You have grasped an affair and become knowing
What must be guarded against, both its inward and outward aspects.
Of what is to be feared, overt or covert

When the rain's sky does not pour richly upon us
When the rain clouds do not pour heavily upon us
In some land, we trust your sky for abundance.
In a land, we trust your skies to shower abundantly

And wine, like the coolness of water in Babylon's wine,
And wine like cool water, though it is Babylonian wine
You united, and never part, like water and wine.
You have gathered, never to separate, like water and wine
وَسَيفُكَand your sword مَنصورٌis victorious وَأَنتَand you مُشَيَّعٌare stout-hearted

وَمِنand of نَفَرٍa band of men لاnot يَعصِمونَthey restrain themselves عَلىover وِترِa blood-debt
وَمِن نَفَرٍ لا يَعصِمونَ عَلى وِترِ
Your sword is victorious, and you are stout-hearted,
Your victorious sword, your supported state
Of a band who show no restraint over a blood-debt.
And retinue undefended by any pact
قَتَلتَyou killed الشُراةَthe Shurat الناكِثينَthe oath-breakers عَنِaway from الهُدىguidance

وَقَنَّعتَ بِالسَيفِ المُقَنَّعِ بِالكُفرِ
You killed the Shurat who broke faith with guidance,
You killed the treacherous apostates
And struck the unbelief-veiled al-Muqanna‘ with your sword.
And the sword sufficed for the one masked in disbelief
فَأَصبَحَso he became قَدalready بَدّلتَهُyou exchanged for him مِنfrom قَميصِهِhis shirt

قَميصاً يَهولُ العَينَ مِن عَلَقٍ حُمرِ
Thus you changed the shirt he wore
So you replaced his robe in the morning
For one that horrifies the eye with red clotted blood.
With one that horrifies the eye with dripping red blood

You go at evening with provisions, and at dawn on a raid,
You venture out with provisions and return with spoils
Against the deeply erring oath-breaker and the inciting envier.
Upon the treacherous wretch and resentful schemer

وَتُمسي حُتوفاً لِلجُبارِ وَمَن يَشري
Thus al-Mahdi's hand rains bounty in the morning,
Thus the hand of Mahdi sacrifices bountifully
And becomes death at evening for the tyrant and whoever sells his life.
And returns grasping for the tyrant and his ilk

And a jealous guardian before the women, as though he were
Passionate unlike other women, as if
A lion confronting night visitors beside its cubs.
He is Usaymah fulfilling the needs of the vulnerable

May God reward Mahdi the worshipper generously
He has defended my faith and lightened the load on my back.
He eased my debt and lightened my burden

He clothed me, gave to me, and honored my seat
He clothed me, granted me, and honored my council
At our gathering on the day of al-Hunayna and al-‘Aqr.
With our council the day of affection and visiting

Now, radiant, I stand in the clan's shelter,
So I have shined in the shade of the clan
Proudly, in the clan's house, with a tenth-share.
Well-off among the clan, enjoying favor

As though I were one of the kings—the kings of Hashim—
As if I am from the kingdoms, the kingdoms of Hashim
At their gates, among [perhaps the needy] and the wealthy.
At their doors, some hosted, some enriched

مَثاباتُ مِن راحٍ وَمِن سَيِّدٍ غَمرِ
Such are the kings' intimates: their houses
Thus are the domains of kings, their homes
Are resorts of wine and a bountiful lord.
Those hosted rest, and master overwhelms guest

طَوَتهُ اللَيالي ما يَريشُ وَلا يَبري
Many a featherer and shaper of arrows, but for Muhammad,
How many bygone arrogant and rainless lords
The nights would have swept away, no longer feathering or shaping.
Whose nights the days would erode, neither hosting nor hosting

فَأَصبَحَ مُلقىً لِلغُرابِ وَلِلنَسرِ
And a tyrant struck by Muhammad's swords
And tyrants struck down by the swords of Muhammad
Now lies cast out for the crow and the vulture.
Left as carrion for crows and eagles

When al-Mahdi sits, his abundant favors spread
When Mahdi sits his virtues pour upon us
Over us as light spreads from the full moon.
As moonlight pours from the full moon

At times he is pure honey; at others
He is sweet honey, sometimes
The people's chief becomes the breast's bitter harvest.
The elder can be bitter as chicory

For him, teats of abundant milk flow freely,
Abundant riches flow his way
And his two palms stream bounty for us.
And his palms rain bounty on the recipient

O you who draw water, Muhammad indeed
Lo tribe pampered with favor! Muhammad
Comes to honor and goes forth with victory.
Surely rises to power and dawns with victory

Of the proud nobles, a lapper of blood when he rides out,
A slaughterer of game when he ventures out
And one who draws down bounty like rain, load upon load.
And raincloud of goodness, most generous upon generous

He performs the deeds of noble men, and with him
Upholding acts of nobility, and in his possession
Is a cure for lovesickness and poverty.
A cure for the illness of love and poverty

Each day, from his two hands, a cloud is ours,
From him each day we have a cloud
Bestowing females and males generously upon us.
Raining upon us females and males

An imam of guidance, his concern is praise and reward,
A leader of guidance, his concern being praise and reward
And there is no good in what brings neither praise nor gratitude.
No good in what is without praise and gratitude

I returned through him rejoicing, without sending ahead
I have returned with him hastily, without appointing
An intercessor; I hope to grant him my whole life.
An intercessor, and I hope to justify my life through him
