أَقَمتُI settled down وَأَجرَيتُand I let run الصِباyouthful folly ماas long as وَحىwhispered واحٍa whisperer
وَأَمسَكتُand I withheld عَنfrom بابِthe door of الضَلالَةِerror مِفتاحيmy key
I have settled down; I let youthful folly run as long as a whisperer whispered,
and kept my key away from the door of error.
وَقالَand said العَذارىthe maidens لَيسَthere is not فيكَin you بَقِيَّةٌanything remaining
كَذَبنَthey lied يَحِزُّcuts السَيفُthe sword فيeven with الطَبَعِthe rust الضاحيshowing plainly
The maidens said, "There is nothing left in you."
They lied: a sword still cuts with its rust showing.
تَمَتَّعتُI enjoyed مِنof وُدِّthe love of الشَبابِyouth الَّذيwhich مَضىpassed away
I am given to drink ريقَهُنَّtheir saliva مَعَwith الراحِwine
I enjoyed the love of youth now gone,
with fair women, given their saliva to drink along with wine.
وَوادُand a lover of العَذارىthe maidens زائِرٌa visitor وَمُرَدَّناًand clad in long sleeves
يَطُفنَthey circle بِذَيّالِaround one trailing السَرابيلِrobes مِسفاحِlavish in giving
And a lover of maidens, a visitor clad in long sleeves,
was circled by them—a lavish man in trailing robes,
مِنَamong القادَةِthe leaders المُستَأذِنينَwho seek admission إِذاwhen غَداhe goes forth
كَأَنَّas though عَلىupon أَعطافِهِhis shoulders ضَوءَthe light of مِصباحِa lamp
one of the leaders who seek admission; when he went forth,
a lamp's glow seemed to lie upon his shoulders.
لَقَدindeed كانَwas يَوميmy day بِالجُدَيدِat al-Judayd مُشَهَّراًrenowned
وَأَيّامُand the days of ذيDhu ضالٍDal وَيَومٌand a day بِذيat Dhu ضاحِDah
My day at al-Judayd was indeed renowned,
and the days at Dhu Dal, and a day at Dhu Dah.
لَيالِيَon nights when أَغدوI go out at dawn بَينَهُنَّamong them مَرَفَّلاًin trailing finery
أُحِبُّI love وَأُعطىand am given حاجَتيmy desire غَيرَwithout being مِلحاحِinsistent
On those nights I would go among them at dawn in trailing finery,
loving, and granted my desire without importuning.
فَغَيَّرَthen changed ذاكَthat العَيشَlife تاجٌa crown لَبِستُهُI wore it
وَطاعَةُand obedience to مَهدِيٍّMahdi كَفَتmade needless قَولَthe words of نُصّاحِadvisers
Then a crown I donned changed that life,
and obedience to Mahdi made advisers' words needless.
فَمِالآنَso now لاnot أَسريI travel by night إِلىto أُمِّUmm مالِكٍMalik
بِعُتبىwith an apology وَلاand not أُصغيI listen إِلىto قَولِthe words of قِرواحِa tall woman
So now I do not travel by night to Umm Malik
with a plea for pardon, nor heed a tall woman's words.
تَمَثَّلَappeared ليto me وَجهُthe face of الخَليفَةِthe caliph دونَهاbetween me and her
فَقُلthen speak فيof حَبيبٍa beloved دونَهُin front of him أَسَدٌa lion شاحِgaping
The caliph's face appeared before me, barring the way to her;
what, then, of a beloved with a gaping lion in the way?
وَنَدمانِand a drinking companion of صِدقٍtrue loyalty قَدalready وصَلتُI joined حديثَهُhis conversation
بِأَزهَرَwith a gleaming vessel مَجّاجِspouting copiously المُدامَةِwine نَبّاحِloudly barking
And a true drinking companion's talk I have accompanied
with a gleaming, wine-spouting, barking vessel.
إِذاwhen فَرَغَتemptied كَأسُthe cup of اِمرِىءٍa man خَرَّit fell ساجِداًprostrate
وَصَبَّand poured لَناfor us صَفراءَyellow wine فيamid طيبِthe fragrance of تُفّاحِapples
Whenever a man's cup emptied, it fell prostrate
and poured us golden wine with the fragrance of apples.
عَلىon ذاكَthat حَتّىuntil رَدَّنيhe turned me back عَنfrom جَهالَةٍfolly
وَماand not الناسُpeople إِلّاexcept طالِبُa seeker of اللَهوِpleasure أَوor صاحِsober
I carried on so until he turned me from folly;
and people are only pleasure-seekers or sober.
وَلَولاand were it not for أَميرُthe Commander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad
رَجَعتُI would have returned بِأُخرىwith another woman مِنamong دُمىthe idols of الناسِhumankind مِلواحِalluring
Were it not for Muhammad, Commander of the Faithful,
I would have returned with another alluring idol among women.
لَهاshe has نَصَفاتٌmiddle-aged women حَولَهاaround her يَستَلِمنَهاthey touch her
كَماjust as اِستَلَمَtouched الرُكنَthe Corner النَواسِكُthe devout women بِالراحِwith palms
She has middle-aged women about her, touching her
as devout women touch the Corner with their palms.
إِذاwhen نَظَرَتshe looked حالَتturned بِهاtoward her عَينُthe eye of ناظِرٍa beholder
وَأَودَتand did away بِأَلبابِwith minds وَأَلوَتand made off بِأَرواحِwith souls
When she looked, a beholder's gaze turned toward her,
and she ruined minds and carried souls away.
فَقُلتُthen I said لَهاto her بانَdeparted الشَبابُyouth فَقَدfor indeed مَضىit has passed
وَصاحَبَنيand accompanied me غَيظٌwrath لِغَيرانَof a jealous man مِنباحِloud-barking
I told her: youth has departed; it is gone,
and a jealous, loud-barking man's wrath accompanies me.
لِعَلَّكِperhaps you أَنthat لاnot تَعرِفينيyou know me بِمِثلِهاfor its like
هَدانيhe guided me أَميرُthe Commander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful بِمِصباحِwith a lamp
Perhaps you will not know me for anything like it;
the Commander of the Faithful has guided me with a lamp.
فَآلَيتُso I swore لاnot آلوI stint الخَليفَةَthe caliph طاعَةًobedience
وَلاand not أَبتَغيI seek إِذناًpermission عَلىto enter upon ذاتِa woman wearing أَوشاحِsashes
So I swore to give the caliph unstinting obedience,
and not to seek leave to visit a woman wearing sashes.
تَرَكتُI left تِجاراتِthe trades in المَعازِفَmusical instruments رائِحاًdeparting
وَأَعرَضتُand I turned away عَنfrom راحٍwine وَعَنand from قَينَتَيtwo singing girls of راحِwine
I left the trade in musical instruments as I departed,
and turned away from wine and its two singing girls.
