رَضيتُ الهَوى إِذ حَلَّ بي مُتَخَيِّراً

رَضيتُ الهَوى إِذ حَلَّ بي مُتَخَيِّراً

نَديماً وَما غَيري لَهُ مَن يُنادِمُه

نَديماً وَما غَيري لَهُ مَن يُنادِمُه

I accepted love when it settled within me, choosing

I was content with passion when it settled upon me, choosing me

a drinking companion; it has no one but me to keep it company.

As a companion, while none but I would sit with it as a companion.

أَعاطيهُ كَأسَ الصَبرِ بَيني وَبَينَهِ

أَعاطيهُ كَأسَ الصَبرِ بَيني وَبَينَهِ

يُقاسِمُنيها مَرَّةً وَأُقاسِمُه

يُقاسِمُنيها مَرَّةً وَأُقاسِمُه

I exchange the cup of patience with it, between us;

I proffer it the cup of patience between me and it,

it shares it with me in turn, and I share it with it.

Sharing it with me once, and me sharing it with it another time.
