    زَوَّدتَني زاداً مِن الأَتراحِ

    Do not blame me for ʿUbayda, my friend;

    you have provisioned me with a store of sorrows.

    And if you must forbid me her love,

    use another name: her name is part of my joy.

    ذِكرُكَ الحُبَّ زائِدي في اِرتِياحي

    Rather, leave love aside, then blame me for her;

    your mention of love heightens my delight.

    وَدَعَوتُ اِسمَها فَطارَ جَناحي

    I mentioned passion, and my heart grew tender;

    I called her name, and my wing took flight.

    Indeed, I once was full of jest, but I have become

    through loving her, little given to jest,

    enraptured by winds that blow from the south.

    Where is another like me who loves the blowing winds?

    O man, your heart is sober,

    untouched by love for her; my heart is not sober.

    ʿAbda has bewitched me, beyond doubt; I

    am on the road to disgrace through loving her.

    Is there, for a lover alone with a beloved,

    any sin in an embrace and a kiss?

    Only in my heart and eye dwells

    love for her of the sated anklet and famished sash.

    وَاِحتَشى المِرطُ مِن أَباةِ رَباحِ

    Firmly knit is her flesh above her wrap's knot;

    and her wrap is filled with ample, unyielding flesh.

    A sheltered maiden who never showed herself to the sun,

    except at Eid al-Fitr or on the morning of Sacrifices.

    On the day she came out, she stole his reason

    with a long-necked beauty's smooth cheek and gleaming silver ornaments,

    and with a mouth that its describer likens

    to the fragrance of musk crumbled into a cup of wine.

    O my two friends, she is my eye's affliction

    and my remedy for its streaming tears.

    Indeed, Umm al-Walid—ask her for a healing charm—

    has ruined me, and with her lies my cure.

    Then say to her—for she is jealously cherished

    by his ravaged heart—

    لَيسَ إِمساكُها مِنَ الإِسجاحِ

    'Be gentle, O ʿUbayd, with my soul's love;

    holding it captive is no gentleness.

    وَصِليني وَسَكِّني أَرواحي

    Your long turning away from me has troubled my soul;

    come to me and soothe my spirits.'

    And I told the skilled physician, 'I shall give

    you my old wealth and my new, in return for success.

    Cure me of my heart's deathly yearning for her,

    with a remedy to curb its fierce unruliness.'

    ما لِمَن يُبتَلى بِهِ مِن رَواحِ

    So he shunned me and said, 'An incurable illness;

    there is no relief for whoever suffers it.

    What cure is there for one who is kept awake at night

    and finds no rest at daybreak?'

    So I prepared for the ending of my life,

    and my mourners readied themselves for my death.
