Did a clear-voiced caller at dawn make you weep,

and a returning vision that journeyed by night from Nahrawan?

And a woman said: The household depends

on you; do not sit idle while neglecting them.

So I told her: Enough; a visitor will provide for you—

proud, a persistent knocker at the doors of kings.

And I am not content with humiliation when there sits, knees drawn up,

in abasement, in shame's abode, a man feasting at ease.

If affairs will not turn their face toward me,

then I have a broad road on hardy she-camels.

And I visited a noble lord; the people spend the morning around him,

in constant attendance, marked by lowliness and submission.

    فَأَجدى وَجودُ الطالِبينَ سَريعُ

    And when we met, his generosity outstripped praise;

so he gave, though petitioners are swift in giving.

And worthy kings—in their embroidered robes I was clothed

by poems; I have no intercessor but them.

And a raincloud—whenever it appears, its lightning flashes,

as a supple woman gleams beneath her cloak.

When a need casts its full burden upon me,

I ride out, and a sword and a whip suffice me.

They seek a man whose wealth praise has pruned,

illustrious, long of reach whenever he extends his arms.

And no wealth is wasted that bequeaths praise to its owners,

but the miser's riches go to waste.

On the timbers of kingship rests the awe you inspire,

and in armor, you are thick-forearmed and hard-striking.

True valor cleaves the fray before his face,

and a gleaming, keen-edged sword of purest iron.

When the miser hoards wealth, this lord's only

treasuries are Khatt spears and coats of mail,

and white blades, bearing musk where his fingertips have been,

yet it is the scent of blood that wafts.

    فَأَنتَ ذُعافٌ مَرَّةً وَرَبيعُ

    You return at evening with provisions and go out at dawn on a raid;

so you are deadly poison at one time, and spring at another.
