By my life, though you are now atop a lopped trunk,

A tall one, where the winds and rain wear you away,

Indeed, you lived open-handed and distinguished,

And at death you were spared the grave's constriction.

And you escaped the earth's confinement and its anguish,

And you did not lose the world—so have you any thanks to offer?

So my eyes find no relief in ceaseless weeping

For you, even if I were to weep until the Resurrection.

So blessed is he who weeps openly for his brother,

But I weep for losing you in secret.
