وَماand ... not ظَفِرَتcaught sight عَينيmy eye غَداةَon the morning لَقيتُهاI met her
وَما ظَفِرَت عَيني غَداةَ لَقيتُها
بِشَيءٍof anything سِوىexcept أَطرافِهاher extremities وَالمَحاجِرِand the eye sockets
بِشَيءٍ سِوى أَطرافِها وَالمَحاجِرِ
And my eye, the morning I met her, caught no glimpse
And naught my eyes obtained when I met her
Of anything but her extremities and the hollows of her eyes.
Save her lashes and pupils, nothing further.
وَحَوراءَand a dark-eyed maiden مِنfrom among حورِhouris الجِنانِParadise غَريرَةٍinnocent
وَحَوراءَ مِن حورِ الجِنانِ غَريرَةٍ
يَرىsees وَجهَهُhis face فيin وَجهِهاher face كُلُّevery ناظِرِonlooker
يَرى وَجهَهُ في وَجهِها كُلُّ ناظِرِ
And an innocent, dark-eyed maiden, one of Paradise’s houris—
Like a houri of Paradise, charming, witty,
Every onlooker sees his own face in hers.
In her face each gazer his own face sees glitter.
