And I was told of people gripped by madness:
They say, “Who is this?” though I was the renowned standard.

Among the noble Banu Amir have grown
my branches; and my root is the Quraysh of the Persians.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I لأُغنيI surely suffice for مَقامَthe place of الفَتىthe young man
وَأُصبيand I captivate الفَتاةَthe maiden فَماso not تَعتَصِمshe protects herself
For I can surely fill a young man's place,
and captivate the maiden, so she does not resist.
وَجارِيَةٍand a maiden خُلِقَتwas created وَحدَهاalone of her kind
كَأَنَّas though النِساءَthe women لَدَيهاbeside her خَدَمservants
And a maiden, created without equal,
as though the women beside her were servants.

أَطَفنَthey circle بِحَوراءَaround a dark-eyed beauty مِثلِlike الصَنَمthe idol
The maidens' Duwar—when they visit her,
they circle a dark-eyed beauty like an idol.
يَظَلنَthey keep يُمَسِّحنَstroking أَركانَهاher sides
كَماjust as يُمسَحُis stroked الحَجَرُthe stone المُستَلَمsaluted by touch
They keep stroking her sides,
as the stone saluted by touch is stroked.
وَبَيضاءَand a fair woman يَضحَكُlaughs ماءُthe water of الشَباyouth (continued)
بِcompletes 'youth' فيon وَجهِهاher face لَكَfor you إِذwhen تَبتَسِمshe smiles
And a fair woman: the water of youth laughs
on her face for you when she smiles.
ظَمِئتُI thirsted إِلَيهاfor her فَلَمbut did not تَسقِنيgive me drink
بِرِيٍّwith a thirst-quenching draught وَلَمand did not تَشفِنيheal me مِنof سَقَمsickness
I thirsted for her, but she gave me no drink
to quench my thirst, and did not heal me of sickness.
وَقالَتand she said هَويتَyou fell in love فَمُتthen die راشِداًrightly guided
كَماas ماتَdied عُروةُUrwah غَمّاًof grief بِغَمwith grief
And she said, “You fell in love—then die rightly guided,
as Urwah died, grief upon grief.”
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَيتُI saw الهَوىpassion قاتِليmy killer
وَلَستُand I was not بِجارٍa neighbor وَلاnor بِاِبنِa son of عَمa paternal uncle
Then, when I saw that passion would kill me,
and I was neither her neighbor nor her cousin,
دَسَستُI sent secretly إِلَيهاto her أَباAbu (father of) مِجلَزٍMijlaz
وَأَيَّand what a فَتىًyoung man إِنif أَصابَhe hit his mark اِعتَزَمhe acted resolutely
I secretly sent Abu Mijlaz to her,
and what a man: if he hit his mark, he acted resolutely.
فَماso not زالَhe ceased حَتّىuntil أَنابَتshe yielded لَهُto him
فَراحَthen he went away وَحَلَّand became lawful لَناfor us ماwhat حَرُمwas forbidden
He did not relent until she yielded to him,
then he went away, and what was forbidden became lawful for us.
أَصَفراءُO yellow one لَيسَis not الفَتىthe young man صَخرةًa rock
ولَكِنَّهُbut he is نُصبُa target for هَمٍّworry وَغَمand grief
O yellow one, a young man is no rock,
but a target for worry and grief.
أَقولُI say لَهاto her حينَwhen قَلَّdwindled الثَراءwealth
وَضاقَand narrowed المُرادُwhat is sought وَأَودىand perished النَعَمthe livestock
I say to her, when wealth dwindles,
and prospects narrow and the herds perish:
إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) اِفتَقَرتُI become poor فَأَحييthen revive السُرىnight travel
إِلىto اِبنِIbn (son of) العَلاءِal-Ala طَبيبِthe physician of العَدَمdestitution
“Whenever I fall into poverty, revive the night journey
to Ibn al-Ala, the physician of destitution.”
دَعانيcalled me إِلىto عُمَرٍUmar جودُهُhis generosity
وَقَولُand the saying of العَشيرَةِthe clan بَحرٌa sea خِضَمvast
His generosity called me to Umar,
and the clan's words: “He is a vast sea.”
وَلَولاand were it not for الَّذيwhat زَعَمواthey claimed لَمnot أَكُنI would be

لِأَمدَحَto praise رَيحانَةًa sprig of sweet basil قَبلَbefore شَمّsmelling
And but for what they said, I would never
praise a sprig of sweet basil before smelling it.
أَلاListen أَيُّهاO you الطالِبُthe seeker المُبتَغيstriving for

Listen, you seeker who pursues
the stars of the sky with a slight effort:
سَمِعتَyou heard بِمَكرُمَةِof the noble deed of اِبنِIbn (son of) العَلاal-Ala
فَأَنشَأتَso you began تَطلُبُهاseeking it لَستَyou are not ثَمّthere
You heard of Ibn al-Ala's noble deed,
so you began seeking it—but you are nowhere near.
إِذاwhen عَرضَarose اللَهوُamusement فيin صَدرِهِhis breast
لَهاhe amuses himself بِالعَطاءِwith giving وَضَربِand striking البُهَمthe mighty warriors
When amusement stirs within his breast,
he amuses himself with giving and striking down mighty warriors.
يَلَذُّhe relishes العَطاءَgiving وَسَفكَand shedding الدِماءِblood
وَيغدوand he goes forth in the morning عَلىintent on نِعَمٍfavors أَوor نِقَمreprisals
He relishes giving and the shedding of blood,
and goes forth in the morning intent on favors or reprisals.
فَقُلso tell لِلخَليفَةِto the caliph إِنif جِئتَهُyou come to him
نَصوحاًas a sincere adviser وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin مُتَّهَمone under suspicion
So tell the caliph, if you come to him,
as a sincere adviser—there is no good in one under suspicion:
إِذاif أَيقَظَتكَwake you حُروبُthe wars of العِداthe enemies
فَنَبِّهthen rouse لَهاfor them عُمَراًUmar ثُمَّthen نَمsleep
“If the enemies' wars wake you,
rouse Umar for them, then sleep.”
فَتىًa young man لاnot يَنامُhe sleeps عَلىwith ثَأرِهِhis vengeance
وَلاand not يَشرَبُhe drinks الماءَwater إِلاّexcept بِدَمwith blood
A young man who does not sleep with his vengeance unfulfilled,
nor drinks water except with blood.
إِذاwhen ماever (emphatic) غَزاhe goes to war بَشَّرَتbring glad tidings طَيرُهُhis birds
بِفَتحٍof victory وَبَشَّرَناand he brings us glad tidings بِالنِعَمof bounties
Whenever he goes to war, his birds bring glad tidings
of victory, and he brings us glad tidings of bounties.
إِذاwhen قالَhe speaks تَمَّhe follows through عَلىon قَولِهِhis word
وَماتَand dies العَناءُtrouble بِلاwith 'no' أَوor نَعَم'yes'
When he speaks, he follows through on his word,
and trouble dies with a “No” or “Yes.”
وَبَعضُand some of الرِجالِthe men بِمَوعودِهِin his promise
قَريبٌnear وَبِالفِعلِyet in deed تَحتَbeneath الرَجَمthe grave's stones
And some men, in what they promise,
are near, yet in deed lie beneath the grave's stones,
كَجاريlike the flowing السَرابِmirage تَرىyou see لَمعَهُits gleam
وَلَستَyet you are not بِواجِدِهِfinding it عِندَكَمwith you (plural)
like a flowing mirage: you see its gleam,
yet you do not find it in your midst.
