وَذاتُand a woman endowed with دَلٍّcoy charm كَأَنَّas though البَدرَthe full moon صورَتُهاher likeness
باتَتshe spent the night تُغَنّيshe sings عَميدَstricken القَلبِthe heart سَكراناdrunk
And a woman of coy charm, as though the full moon were her likeness,
With a charming coquette whose face rivals the full moon
spent the night singing to a drunken, lovesick man:
She kept singing, intoxicating the heart's commander
إِنَّindeed العُيونَthe eyes الَّتيwhich فيin طَرفِهاtheir gaze حَوَرٌstriking contrast of dark irises and white sclerae
قَتَلنَناthey slew us ثُمَّthen لَمdid not يُحيينَthey revive قَتلاناour slain
Indeed, those eyes with their deep black and brilliant white
Indeed the eyes that have fascination in their gaze
slew us, then did not bring our slain back to life.
Killed us, then did not bring us back to life after killing us
فَقُلتُso I said أَحسَنتِyou have done well ياO سُؤليmy desire وَياand O أَمَليmy hope
فَأَسمِعينيso let me hear جَزاكِmay He reward you اللَهُGod إِحساناwith goodness
So I said: Well done, O my desire and my hope!
So I said “You have done well, O my hope and aspiration
So let me hear more; may God reward you with goodness.
Let me hear you, may God reward you with goodness”
ياO حَبَّذاhow lovely is جَبلُMount الرَيّانِal-Rayyan مِنas a جَبَلٍmountain
وَحَبَّذاand how lovely is ساكِنُthe dweller of الرَيّانِal-Rayyan مَنwhoever كاناthey may be
Oh, how lovely a mountain is Mount al-Rayyan!
O excellent is Mount Rayyan among all mountains
And how lovely is al-Rayyan's dweller, whoever they may be!
And excellent are Rayyan’s inhabitants among all people
قالَتshe said فَهَلّاthen why not فَدَتكَmay it ransom you النَفسُthe soul أَحسَنَbetter مِنthan

She said: Then how about—may my soul be your ransom—something better than
She said “Would my soul not redeem you better
this, for one lovesick at heart and bewildered?
Than this, for one whose heart is confused?”
ياO قَومُpeople أُذنيmy ear لِبعَضِfor someone of الحَيِّthe tribe عاشِقَةٌin love
وَالأُذنُand the ear تَعشَقُfalls in love قَبلَbefore العَينِthe eye أَحياناsometimes
O people, my ear is in love with someone of the tribe;
O people, my ear loves some of the living
and the ear sometimes falls in love before the eye.
For the ear falls in love before the eye at times
فَقُلتُso I said أَحسَنتِyou have done well أَنتِyou الشَمسُthe sun طالِعَةٌrising
أَضرَمتِyou kindled فيin القَلبِthe heart وَالأَحشاءِand the entrails نيراناfires
So I said: Well done! You are the rising sun;
I said “You have done well, you are the rising sun
you have kindled fires in my heart and entrails.
Igniting fires in the heart and entrails”
فَأَسمِعينِيَso let me hear صَوتاًa song مُطرِباًdelightful هَزَجاًlilting
يَزيدُit increases صَبّاًa lovesick man مُحِبّاًa lover فيكِover you أَشجاناsorrows
So let me hear a delightful, lilting song
Let me hear a melodious, exciting voice
that deepens a lovesick lover's sorrows over you.
Increasing ardent love for you in me
ياoh لَيتَنيif only I كُنتُI were تُفّاحاًapples مُفَلَّجَةًsliced
أَوor كُنتُI were مِنfrom among قُضَبِthe shoots of الرَيحانِbasil رَيحاناa sprig of basil
Oh, if only I were sliced apples,
Would that I were an apple, split open
or were a sprig of basil among the basil shoots,
Or that I were a sprig of sweet basil
حَتّىso that إِذاwhen وَجَدَتshe found ريحيmy scent فَأَعجَبَهاand it pleased her
وَنَحنُwhile we فيin خَلوَةٍseclusion مُثِّلتُI was given form إِنساناas a human
so that, when she caught my scent and it pleased her,
So that if she found my scent pleasing
while we were alone, I would be given human form.
And we were alone, I would take human form
فَحَرَّكَتthen she strummed عودَهاher lute ثُمَّthen اِنثَنَتshe swayed طَرَباًin delight
تَشدوshe sings بِهِwith it ثُمَّthen لاnot تُخفيهِshe hides it كِتماناin concealment
Then she strummed her lute, then swayed in delight,
She would pluck her lute, then sway with rapture
singing to its accompaniment, then keeping none of the song concealed:
Singing it, not hiding it secretively
أَصبحتُI have become أَطوَعَthe most obedient خَلقِcreatures of اللَهِGod كُلِّهِمِall of them
لأَكثَرِto the most الخَلقِof creatures ليtoward me فيin الحُبِّlove عِصياناdefiance
I have become the most obedient of all God's creatures
I have become the most obedient of all God's creatures
to the one who defies me most of all in love.
To most people, though to love I am disobedient
فَقُلتُso I said أَطرَبتِناyou delighted us ياO زَينَadornment of مِجلِسِناour gathering
فَهاتِso give إِنَّكِindeed you بِالإِحسانِin kindness أَولاناthe worthiest among us
So I said: You have delighted us, O adornment of our gathering!
I said “You have delighted us, O beauty of our gathering
So give us more, for you are foremost among us in kindness.
Give us more, for with goodness you began with us”
لَوif كُنتُI was أَعلَمُI knew أَنَّthat الحُبَّlove يَقتُلُنيwould kill me
أَعدَدتُI would have prepared ليfor myself قَبلَbefore أَنthat أَلقاكِI meet you أَكفاناshrouds
Had I known that love would kill me,
Had I known that love would kill me
I would have prepared shrouds for myself before meeting you.
I would have prepared my shroud before meeting you
فَغَنَّتِthen she sang الشَربَthe drinking companions صَوتاًa song مُؤنِقاًdelightful رَمَلاًin ramal rhythm
يُذكيit kindles السُرورَjoy وَيُبكيand makes weep العَينَthe eye أَلواناin varied ways
Then she sang the drinking companions a delightful song in ramal rhythm,
She sang the drink in a poignant, tremolo voice
kindling joy and drawing tears from the eye in varied ways:
Kindling happiness and making the eyes shed tears
لاdoes not يَقتُلُkill اللَهُGod مَنwhoever دامَتhas endured مَوَدَّتُهُhis affection
وَاللَهُand God يَقتُلُkills أَهلَpeople of الغَدرِtreachery أَحياناsometimes
God does not kill one whose affection remains constant,
God does not kill one whose affection endures
and God sometimes kills the treacherous.
Though God may kill the treacherous at times
لاdo not تَعذِلونيreproach me فَإِنّيfor I am مِنfrom تَذَكُّرِهاremembering her
نَشوانُdrunk هَلdo يَعذِلُreproach الصاحونَthe sober نَشواناa drunken man
Do not reproach me, for remembering her leaves me
Do not blame me, for remembering her
drunk—do the sober reproach a drunken man?
Brings me joy - does the wakeful blame the sleepy for drowsiness?
لَمdid not أَدرِI know ماwhat وَصفُهاher description يَقظانَawake قَدindeed عَلِمَتshe knew

I did not know what she was like while I was awake—she knew this—
I do not know whether my portrayal of her awake is true
though I had sometimes dallied with her in sleep.
For I have toyed with her in dreams at times
باتَتَshe spent the night تُناوِلُنيshe offers me فاهاًher mouth فَأَلثُمُهُand I kiss it

She spent the night offering me her mouth, and I kissed it—
She would offer me her mouth and I would kiss it
a female jinn wed in sleep to a human being.
A jinniya married to a human in dreams
