Ah, O idol of the Azd,

    whom they call a lord,

may you be given sweet water from my love,

even if you give me no sweet water to drink.

I find myself anguished because of you,

yet you lift no anguish from me.

Will you not grant me, from yourself,

the heart's release from longing, or nearness?

    For longing calls me,

and I am dying of love.

    Whenever the eye remembers you,

it cannot hold back its flood of tears.

It is as though I am bewitched by you,

yet you have worked no spell upon me.

But love for you has entered

my entrails and crept through them.

Does my body, I wonder, yearn?

You have poured sorrow upon me in torrents.

And suppose that I had sinned—

will you not forgive me a sin?

You have left the heart dead,

    and left me no wits.

I pass the night in sorrow,

and go forth in the morning, wandering and love-stricken.

Like one beset by obsession, who does not appease

    whoever reproaches or insults him.

    فَوَيلٌ لي إِذا شَبّا

    And love's infant has worn me down;

so woe to me when it grows up.

    For I have no heart,

even if you see a heart.

Thus we pass our evenings, while he remains

neither at peace with us nor at war.

So tell me, as I call upon

    you all night, bowed down:

will you heal me of my ailments,

    or lead me to death?

    For death has become sweet

to one whom you have led into drought.

He answers the call of the Azd's qibla,

and but for you, he would not have answered.
