يَقولُsays أَبوfather of عَمروٍAmr غَداةَone morning تَهَلَّلَتstreamed
مِنَfrom العَينِthe eye دَرّاتٌdrops وَفاضَand overflowed سَفوحُهاits flowing tears
Abu Amr says, one morning when tears streamed
in drops from the eye, and its flowing tears overflowed:
أَجِدَّكَare you in earnest? مِنfor رَيحانَةٍa basil sprig طابَwas sweet ريحُهاits scent
ظَلِلتَyou kept تُبَكّيyou weep for خُلَّةًa beloved وَتَنوحُهاand you lament her
Is it truly for a basil sprig whose scent was sweet
that you kept weeping for a beloved and lamenting her?
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him لاdo not تُكثِرincrease اللَومَblame إِنَّنيindeed I
أَتىcame مِنfrom هَوىpassion نَفسيmy soul عَلَيَّupon me جُموحُهاits unruliness
So I told him: Do not heap blame on me, for
my soul's headstrong passion has overwhelmed me.
كَأَنَّكَas though you لَمdid not تَعلَمknow لِعَبدَةَfor Abda حُرمَةًsacred standing
وَأَسرارَand secrets حُبِّlove عِندَناwith us لاnot نُبيحُهاwe reveal them
As though you did not know the reverence owed to Abda,
and the secrets of love we hold and do not reveal.
تَثاقَلَتِshe held back الذَلفاءُthe snub-nosed beauty عَنّيfrom me وَماand did not دَرَتknow
بِذيof one possessing كَبِدٍa liver حَرّىburning يَغَصُّchokes قَريحُهاher wounded lover
The snub-nosed beauty held back from me, unaware
of one with a burning liver—her wounded lover, choking.
وَقَدand indeed كادَتnearly الأَيّامُthe days دونَwithout لِقائِهاmeeting her
تَصَرَّمُcome to an end إِلّاexcept أَنthat يَمُرَّpasses سَنيحُهاher auspicious apparition
And the days, without a meeting with her, have almost
run out, save when her auspicious apparition passes by.
يُذَكِّرُنيreminds me الرَيحانُsweet basil رائِحَةَthe scent الَّتيthe one who
إِذاwhen لَمnot تَطَيَّبshe perfumes herself وافَقَmatched المِسكَmusk ريحُهاher scent
Sweet basil reminds me of the scent of the one
whose fragrance matches musk even when she wears no perfume.
عُبَيدَةُUbayda هَمُّconcern النَفسِthe soul إِنif يَدنُdraws near حُبُّهاher love
وَإِنand if تَنأَshe goes far away عَنهاfrom it فارَقَleft النَفسَthe soul روحُهاits spirit
Ubayda is the soul's concern if her love draws near;
and if she goes far from it, its spirit deserts the soul.
فَلاso not هِيَit (the soul) مِنfrom شَوقٍlonging إِلَيهاfor her تُريحُنيgives me relief
وَلاand not أَناI مِنfrom طولِlength of الرَجاءِhope أُريحُهاI relieve it
So my soul gives me no relief from longing for her,
nor do I relieve it of prolonged hope.
هَواكِlove for you غَبوقُevening draught النَفسِthe soul فيin كُلِّevery لَيلَةٍnight
وَذِكرُكُموand remembrance of you (plural) فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday صَبوحُهاits morning draught
Love for you is the soul's evening draught every night,
and remembrance of you is its morning draught every day.
وَلِلنَفسُand for the soul حاجاتٌneeds إِلَيكِto you إِذاwhen خَلَتit is alone
سَيَعياwill be tongue-tied بِهاover them عِندَat اللِقاءِthe meeting فَصيحُهاits eloquent speaker
And the soul has needs of you when it is alone;
its eloquent speaker will be tongue-tied over them when we meet.
فَلَستُso I am not بِسالٍone who forgets ماas long as تَغَنَّتsings حَمامَةٌa dove
وَماand as long as شاقَstirs longing in رُهبانَmonks النَصارىthe Christians مَسيحُهاtheir Messiah
So I shall not forget, as long as a dove sings,
and as long as their Messiah stirs longing in Christian monks.
