You forsook Umamah for a long time,
You deserted Ummama with a long desertion
and distance burdened you with a heavy load.
And separation burdened you with heavy burdens

Despite her distance, you were made to bear from her
And you were burdened with her separation
a visiting phantom and scant favor,
With little attainment and brief imaginary intimacy

She came to us asking what we scattered

So we told her that we were determined to depart

heedless of us ever since the caravan encamped.'
That when the caravan turned away from us we were heedless

So she confronted me hastily
of tears that drenched a smooth cheek.
With tears flowing down her cheeks

And most of what she said as she turned away
in speech was merely outward courtesies and talk.
Was just murmuring and saying farewell

Prepares for himself each day some worries

So I readied for travel a she-camel
massive, powerful, and swift at the trot,
Grayish white, lively, with split lips

Fickleness slips away from him

And a chest smooth as a roller
you would think a haircloth lay over it.

She passed by thorn-trees at dawn
and skirted Arik's side in the late afternoon.
And brushed against the side of a lofty sand-dune

Stepping with all her heavy forelegs

The wind obeyed her command absolutely

She outdistances at nightfall the horses on the road
when the people travel through a long night.

whom death has all but overtaken.

convey a message to the foremost men of Sahm:

then march toward death with a noble stride.
