The companions made their parting final and set out at dawn,

toward their destination; then they neither turned aside nor waited.

They bridled the camels and said, “Your drinking-place

is the water of Bukayla, neither salty nor turbid.”

All that passed between them was an open declaration,

which you feared—yet what did caution gain you?

They headed toward the eastern descent, urged onward

on the march by a scowling man, all abuse and impatience.

Their camel litters, lifted by the mirage, seemed

like the palms of al-Mushaqqar, or those adorning Hajar.

I kept watching them through the mirage from a height,

until the neighbors passed beyond the reach of sight.

So entertain those sleeping cares with a powerfully built she-camel,

nimble, easy-striding, with a curve in her low-set chest.

She scatters pebbles in tattoo-like flecks from beneath her hoof-tip,

as a threshing-sledge crushes the villages’ dark grain.

She sweeps a thick, tufted tail across her haunches,

like a date-cluster, neither twisted nor scant of hair.

It is as if her forelegs’ swing, when she sweats,

and the trees gather their shade within their bounds,

were the arm-swing of a tireless mourner whose only son flourished,

until, when he reached his prime, fate carried him away.

Carry to our people, if you reach them, a justification

on our behalf—yet will any excuse avail them with us?

that we adjure them by God, for one thing,

and by kinship, and the other claim they have neglected:

our worthy service, and days of ours gone by,

that make hair turn white whenever they are recalled.

So do not assail us with falsehood; restrain yourselves,

for you have experience of what it means to touch us.

Do not let peace make you insolent; be patient with your brothers.

Indeed, remorse runs, but arrogance has outrun it.

And we have a morning draught, unmixed,

over which spurge and aloes stanch the blood.

Among us are young warriors, and chieftains ready to rally

at dawn; and we have great herds of camels.

How many a chief have we utterly cut down

with Mashrafi swords, till the proud tilt of the neck was set straight.
