إِذا ما طَوى دوني اِمرؤٌ بَطنَ كَفِّهِ

إِذا ما طَوى دوني اِمرؤٌ بَطنَ كَفِّهِ

طَوَيتُ يَميني دونَهُ وَشمالِيا

طَوَيتُ يَميني دونَهُ وَشمالِيا

If ever a man closes his palm to me,

If a man conceals his hand from me,

I close my right hand to him, and my left.

I conceal both my right and left hands from him.

يَبينُ لَنا ذو الحِلمِ مِن حُلَمائِنا

يَبينُ لَنا ذو الحِلمِ مِن حُلَمائِنا

إِذا ما تَعاطَينا الزُجاجَ تَعاطِيا

إِذا ما تَعاطَينا الزُجاجَ تَعاطِيا

The truly forbearing man among our forbearing men is revealed to us

The wise shows us who is wise among the foolish,

When we pass the glasses back and forth.

When we clink glasses together.

أَرى الكَأسَ تهدي لِلَّئيمِ مَلامَة

أَرى الكَأسَ تهدي لِلَّئيمِ مَلامَة

وَتَترُكُ أَخلاقَ الكَريمِ كَما هِيا

وَتَترُكُ أَخلاقَ الكَريمِ كَما هِيا

I see the cup bring reproach upon the base man,

I see the wine cup blames the mean one,

And leave the noble man's character as it is.

And leaves the noble one's morals intact.

رَأَيتُ أَقَلَّ الناسِ عَقلاً إِذا اِنتَشى

رَأَيتُ أَقَلَّ الناسِ عَقلاً إِذا اِنتَشى

أَقَلَّهُمُ عَقلاً إِذا كانَ صاحِيا

أَقَلَّهُمُ عَقلاً إِذا كانَ صاحِيا

I have found the least sensible of people when drunk

I've seen the most reasonable when drunk,

To be the least sensible of them when sober.

Become the most unreasonable when sober.
