I am the meaning; my presence is in my absence,

and my unveiling lies behind the veil's secrets.

أفيض من الحروف إذا تجلت

أفيض من الحروف إذا تجلت

وأختصر العبارة في الخطابِ

وأختصر العبارة في الخطابِ

I pour forth from the letters when they reveal themselves,

I flow from letters when I appear,

and condense expression in speech.

And summarize expression in speech.

أخيط من السحاب وشاح روحي

أخيط من السحاب وشاح روحي

ومن روحي أفيض على السحابِ

ومن روحي أفيض على السحابِ

I stitch my soul's shawl from the clouds,

I weave my soul a scarf of clouds,

and from my soul I pour forth upon the clouds.

And from my soul I pour upon the clouds.

إذا غابت حروفي ذبت فيها

إذا غابت حروفي ذبت فيها

وطاف الصمت من وجد الكتابِ

وطاف الصمت من وجد الكتابِ

When my letters vanish, I dissolve into them,

When my letters are gone I melt in them,

and silence wanders out of the book's rapture.

And silence encircles those who found the book.

وإن حار السؤال طويت فيه

وإن حار السؤال طويت فيه

سؤالا شف عن سر الجوابِ

سؤالا شف عن سر الجوابِ

And if the question is bewildered, I fold within it

If the question wanders lost, I fold within it

a question that grew transparent, revealing the answer's secret.

A question that reveals the secret of the answer.

أعلق من أصابعه خيالي

ليدرك في مسافته اقترابي

I hang my imagination from its fingers,

I hang my imagination on his fingers

so it may perceive my approach within its distance.

So he can grasp how close I draw in the distance.

I shine from the depths of my songs

and casts me at the door of mist.

And cast myself upon the door of mist.

هو الحب الذي أسعى إليه

سعى لي حينما أشرعت بابي

It is the love I strive toward;

It's the love I strive for,

it hastened to me when I flung open my door.

That strove for me when I unfurled my door.

به حلت قصائد من خيال

Through it came poems of imagination,

With it, poems poured from my imagination

and the river grew light, its skin trembling.

And the restless, roaring river grew still.

فطاوعت الخطا لما دعاني

وطاوعني على صحوي شرابي

So I obeyed the footsteps when it called me,

I obeyed the lines when they called me,

and my drink obeyed me in my sobriety.

And they obeyed me in my sober draught.

وكلمني وألقى الحرف بوحا

لينسل من معانيه ترابي

لينسل من معانيه ترابي

And it spoke to me and cast forth the letter as a confession,

It spoke to me and cast words in revelation

so my dust might slip out of its meanings.

To trickle meaning from them like my dust.

I touched the roses; they shone from my longing.

I touched the rose, it shone from my yearning,

I summoned the sea; it pressed on in my train.

I called the sea, it lingered at my feet.

كأن الريح والأسرار دابي

كأن الريح والأسرار دابي

I folded the wind and so became whole as song,

I folded the wind until song was complete,

as though the wind and secrets were my habit.

As though the wind and secrets were my carpet.

أنا المعنى يبددني وضوحي

ويكشفني بغيبته غيابي

ويكشفني بغيبته غيابي

I am the meaning; my clarity disperses me,

I am meaning, my clarity scatters me,

and my absence unveils me through its absence.
