Heal my heart, O merciful cupbearer,

with that through which decayed bones come to life.

Wed the tawny wine to crystal-clear water,

and make my reason her lawful dowry.

A daughter of the vine, she makes an old man young.

Whoever tastes of her vanishes from both worlds.

    دنها قلبي وصدري طورها

    A wine whose light comes from Moses' fire;

her wine jar is my heart, and my breast her Mount Sinai.

Rise, and do not delay, for life grants no respite.

Do not make drinking it difficult—the matter is easy.

Rise, and do not delay, for dawn has broken.

And the Pleiades have set, and the rooster has crowed.

Tell an old man whose heart recoils from it:

Do not fear, for God ever accepts repentance and forgives.

O singer, indeed every sorrow is with me.

Rise, and cast fire into it with melody.

O singer, rise, for life has been wasted.

Life is sweet only through listening to music.

You too, O singer, do not sleep.

Rise, and drive every sorrow from my heart.

Sing me a song, for the goblet has gone round.

And the east wind has arisen, and the turtledove has sung.

And recount in my presence tales of the beloved.

Indeed, my life is not sweet without them.

And recall the memory of tales of parting.

Indeed, the mention of separation is unbearable.

Refresh my soul with the poetry of the Arabs,

so that our good fortune and rapture may be complete.

And begin with some pleasing verse from among them,

which I composed one day in my youth:

We have spent our lives in idle talk and gossip.

O my drinking companion, rise, for little opportunity remains.
