أنتَ أهلُ المَعْروفِ يا مَعْروفُ

أنتَ أهلُ المَعْروفِ يا مَعْروفُ

وأبو الفَتْكِ يومَ تَزْهو الصُّفوفُ

وأبو الفَتْكِ يومَ تَزْهو الصُّفوفُ

You are the master of gnosis, O my Gnosis,

You are a man of kindness, O Maʿruf,

And father of the onslaught when the ranks shine proudly.

And the father of deadly assault on the day the ranks stand proud.

لكَ عَزمٌ في حَضرةِ الصِّدقِ أبْدَى

لكَ عَزمٌ في حَضرةِ الصِّدقِ أبْدَى

سِرَّ قُدْسٍ بُرْهانُهُ مَوْصوفُ

سِرَّ قُدْسٍ بُرْهانُهُ مَوْصوفُ

Yours is a resolve that, in the Presence of Truth, revealed

Yours is a resolve that, in the presence of truth, revealed

A mystery of holiness whose proof is renowned.

A sacred mystery whose proof is described.

وأنا العاجزُ الضَّعيفُ وأنِّي

وأنا العاجزُ الضَّعيفُ وأنِّي

ليَ قلبٌ بِحُبِّكمْ مَشْغوفُ

ليَ قلبٌ بِحُبِّكمْ مَشْغوفُ

And I am the helpless, the weak—and indeed

And I am the helpless, weak one; and indeed I

I have a heart enthralled by love of you.

Have a heart enthralled by love for you.

ولأنتَ المَقْصودُ في هذه الحَضْ

ولأنتَ المَقْصودُ في هذه الحَضْ

رَةِ جَهْراً وها أنا المَلْهوفُ

رَةِ جَهْراً وها أنا المَلْهوفُ

And indeed you are the one sought in this

And you are indeed the one sought in this pres-

Presence, openly—and here I am, heartsick.

دَهَمَتْني عَلائِقُ النَّفْسِ مِنِّي

دَهَمَتْني عَلائِقُ النَّفْسِ مِنِّي

ولَعَمْرُ العِرْفانِ هذا الحُتوفُ

ولَعَمْرُ العِرْفانِ هذا الحُتوفُ

The entanglements of my own lower self have overwhelmed me;

My own self’s attachments have overwhelmed me;

By my life, this gnosis is death itself.

And, by the life of spiritual knowledge, this is doom.

فاجْتَذِبْني من وَحْلَتي بأكُفٍّ

فاجْتَذِبْني من وَحْلَتي بأكُفٍّ

كلُّ هَمٍّ بِعَزْمها مَكْفوفُ

كلُّ هَمٍّ بِعَزْمها مَكْفوفُ

So draw me from my mire with your hands—

So draw me from my mire with hands

By their strength, every sorrow is held at bay.

By whose resolve every care is held at bay.

وانْظُرَنْ نَظْرَةَ الحَنانِ لِحالي

وانْظُرَنْ نَظْرَةَ الحَنانِ لِحالي

حيثُ أنِّي بِحالكمْ مَحْفوفُ

حيثُ أنِّي بِحالكمْ مَحْفوفُ

And do raise a cry of tenderness for my plight,

And do look upon my plight with a tender glance,

For I am enfolded in your spiritual state.

For I am encompassed by your spiritual state.

وعلى جَدِّكَ الصَلاةُ دَواماً

وعلى جَدِّكَ الصَلاةُ دَواماً

وعليكَ الرِّضْوانُ يا مَعْروفُ

وعليكَ الرِّضْوانُ يا مَعْروفُ

And upon your forefather be blessings forever,

And may blessings be upon your grandfather forever,

And upon you be divine favor, O my Gnosis.

And divine favor upon you, O Maʿruf.
