Whoever is a servant to a people, let him fulfill toward them

The requirement of pure servitude, with due courtesy.

And let him occupy himself with them, not with the affairs of others,

Even if he is torn apart between toil and exhaustion.

How astonishing some are: they slipped in their claim to love,

And they persisted, roaming the encampment with lies.

    فأَينَ أَنتَ من الأَعراضِ والنَّشَبِ

    A condition of love is surrendering the heart to it;

Then where do you stand regarding worldly goods and wealth?

Love seizes its people and drives them

Away from every pious, righteous son and father.

Love admits no partnership; it is forever one,

Apart from attachments, severing the cord and kinship.

Praise be to God: I have a heart in which I treasured

My beloved, safeguarded: he was neither present nor absent.

An alif, stripped of my knowledge and my deeds,

And of my insights, my taste, and my courtesy,

And of my spirit's ladders in its climbing,

And of the virtues of my peoples and my ancestral honor.

I said to my heart only, when recalling

My beloved's meanings: 'Withdraw from joy, and be at peace.'

The Throne, the earthly expanse, and the celestial spheres bear witness for me

That I sever my bond with all but him.

I live, I die, in my two states of rapture,

Between drawing away from him and drawing near.

Oh, the wonders! The heart has melted for him,

And I did not say, 'O my heart, melt in passion.'

    إِذا برزْتُ جَثَوْا ذُلاًّ على الرُكَبِ

    I have become sultan of the company of his lovers;

When I appear, they fall submissively to their knees.

    فالماءُ ماءُ أَبي والبئرُ بئرُ أَبي

    From Hashim, noble clay sprang forth within me;

So the water is my father's water, and the well my father's well.

By the sanctity of the green breath, arriving

From the garden of ban trees, between wormwood and dunes,

And by a garden that gave us, from their cups,

Delicious wine that came with a sweet draught,

And by an overwhelming clamour from longing's ambush,

That rose for the people of love with the clamorous army,

And by towering flashes of lightning from their manifestations,

That set the right of the two ribs ablaze for us within the domes,

And by every subtle secret from communion

Within the breasts—we were not referred to books—

And by the tablet of their decrees, parting in a smile to reveal wise sayings

Wondrous, stirring the mind to wonder,

I never once imagined my own existence—[unclear character]—by their glory,

Nor did I turn toward my return and my final destination.

How often I behold, for my life, the spirit of their breeze,

Finding solace, as a discerning, seasoned youth would.

How often I ask the wind about news of their reign,

I would ransom the sanctuary's little breezes with my mother and father.

How often I knock at the door while the riders sleep,

And the mind is between being present and being snatched away.

And from high resolves I draw an outpouring of the caravan's dust,

And the people are between those summoned and those volunteering.

Those familiar haunts have come into view, O my heart; be at peace,

And rejoice in your beloved, safe from weariness.

The beloved bestowed generously upon us after famine,

And we are safe from the murderous ambush of fear and dread.

Praise be to God: union without separation,

Through the resolve of the Hashimite, the Arab master.
