What wine is this that the goblets have borne round,
What wine in cups passed round
And what aged wine has souls for its cups?
And draughts their spirits drowned

وأطاشَand bewildered العُقولَthe minds ذاكَthat الرَّاحُwine
It carried the lovers east and west,
To east and west with lovers moved
And that wine sent minds reeling.
And sense that wine unproved

Smelling it intoxicated the company; they called to one another,
It made men reel till scattered they
And sought help, and cried out in love's bewilderment.
And wailed in their dismay

And fulfilled passion's rite by laying themselves bare;
They spent their love immodestly
Such is love: its creed lays one bare.
For open love's the drunkard's way

In burning ardor, they groaned and yearned all the more,
More fervent grown their yearning sighs
And wept with longing and passion, and lamented.
In melting mood they weeping rise

An intoxication that turns the coward brave,
A drunk that makes the coward brave
And joys greet its sorrowful one.
And gladdens sorrow with its wave

طَرحواthey cast off رِبْقةَthe yoke of الوُجودِexistence وراحواand departed
The rulings of men have made it lawful for us,
Learned men made lawful by decree
Who cast off existence's yoke and departed.
Who world and faith aside did free

They forbade its opposite and expressly decreed it;
And banned its opposite, but allowed
So through it, death is lawful for the lover.
For lovers death by it avowed

Its light may dispel the gloom of dark nights,
Its light can pierce through darkest gloom
In bottles from which dawn gleams.
When morning gleams around its foam

O cupbearers, round after round,
You cupbearers, replenish cheer
And be tender: passion's creed is generosity.
For gentle love grants all things clear

If you see us speaking out, compelled by drunkenness,
If crazed by wine you see us now
Then pardon us: your drunken one freely tells all.
Forgive your drunkenness allow

We have strung longing's jewels into verse about you;
We've strung love's gems in verse for you
And they are genuine, O masters of existence.
The truest words, kind sirs, and true

By Him who taught the lover to yearn,
By whom love's longing was decreed
Wounds from eyelids have laid me low.
My lids are wounded and they bleed

My heart's core roasts over ghada embers,
My heart for love of you now tossed
In utter annihilation, while my tearful eye streams on.
With burning sighs, my tears embossed

I have grown fond of daisies, since they gained from you
I've learned to love the wine so well
A likeness—and in the cheeks are daisies.
When by your cheek its blushes tell

As for me, without you my heart would never have rejoiced
Without you, where would my heart find peace?
At the face of bright morning—and does it rejoice?
Does dawn e'er bring the weary ease?

My tears have translated my longing for you;
My silent tears translate the fire
Many a tear's silence is disclosure.
In which my longing doth aspire

It is I whose lament made Noah's flood flow;
I am the flood of Noah's grief
It is I whose groans are winds for the ships.
I am the winds that bring relief

My bones are planks that build the ark
To your sanctuary, are planks—by your right.
To save you, for 'tis you I hark

Longings for you have assailed us in open combat;
With longing's waves so hard we've fought
At times, struggle overcomes struggle.
And longing may defeat its thought

To be lost in love for you is above our station;
Too far in love of you we're lost
And indeed, the ugly love the beautiful.
And foul with fair may intercrossed

We have unfolded passion in the folds within us;
Our love is spread through all the vale
So we went mad, and the counselors grew weary of us.
And mad desire may counsel fail

How strange! They overlooked our ranks,
Strange, they ignore our rank denied
While our fragrance wafts widely among them.
Though we stand unique, they deride

And the locks of minds fell away at the door,
While wise men at the doorpost fall
And some people found rest there through death.
And some in death find peace withal

The hand of Majesty closed it in might;
Shut by God's mighty hand, the door
Then the Opener took charge of opening it.
None can unbar but He before

When wine of mysteries bubbles bright
The goblets murmur it for its people.
And brims the eager cups with light
