أيُّwhat عينٍeye رأتْsaw حَبيبيmy beloved ونامتْand slept
وعنand to الكونِthe universe كُلِّهِall of it ماnot تعامتْturned a blind eye
What eye has seen my beloved and slept,
What eye has seen my love and then slept,
and not turned a blind eye to the whole universe?
And from the whole universe withdrawn and kept aloof?
أيُّwhat خلْصاءِpure مُهجةٍsoul عشِقَتهُloved him passionately
وبِسلسالِand by the smooth flow of خَمرهِhis wine ماnot هامَتْbecame enraptured
What pure soul has loved him
What chaste and passionate one has loved him
and not been enraptured by his smooth-flowing wine?
And not become intoxicated by his wine of love?
هيit is أشواقُهُlongings for him التيthat أقلَقتْنيunsettled me
واستمرَّتْand continued معwith الفؤادِthe heart ودامَتْand endured
It is longing for him that has unsettled me,
It is his passions that have disturbed me
and stayed with the heart, and endured.
And remained with my heart and endured.
أنكرتْdisapproved of حاليmy state العواذِلُthe reproaching women طَيْشاًrashly
وتَمادتْand went too far للجهْلِout of ignorance فيهin it ولامتْand reproached
The reproaching women rashly condemned my state,
The maidens denied my condition madly
and, through ignorance, went too far in this and reproached me.
And blamed me in ignorance and reproached me.

And you see me—praise be to my Lord—with my soul
Yet thanks to my Lord, myself I do restrain
fasting from all forms of existence for the beloved.
From all existence, in love silent and abstain.

I have not left his thresholds for the blink of an eye,
I have not ceased to attend his gates a single wink
even if the Resurrection were to come.
Even if the resurrection itself should come.
