The signs of that sacred presence

The verses of that sacred presence

Revealed the meanings of the unseen subtlety,

Revealed the meanings of the occult subtlety

وجلت لأصحاب القلوب رقائقاً

وجلت لأصحاب القلوب رقائقاً

ظهرت وها هي في الظهور خفيه

ظهرت وها هي في الظهور خفيه

And unveiled delicate truths to those endowed with hearts.

And made clear to the owners of hearts, gentle feelings

They appeared—yet behold, in manifestation they are hidden.

Appearing, here it is, hidden in appearance

يا أهل جرعاء الغوير بحقكم

يا أهل جرعاء الغوير بحقكم

عطفاً علي فمهجتي مشويه

عطفاً علي فمهجتي مشويه

O people of Jarʿāʾ al-Ghuwayr, by your rightful due,

O people of Jir'a Al-Ghuwair, for your sake

Have compassion on me, for my heart's core is seared.

Showing sympathy for my scorched innards

أبكي إذا لمعت بروق طلولكم

أبكي إذا لمعت بروق طلولكم

شوقاً إليكم والشؤن جليه

شوقاً إليكم والشؤن جليه

I weep when lightning flashes over your ruined camps,

I cry when the lightning of your heights flashes

Out of longing for you, with tear ducts plain to see.

Yearning for you, while the matter is obvious

وأذوب إن غنى لي الحادي بكم

وأذوب إن غنى لي الحادي بكم

متطيلساً برداء صدق لنيه

متطيلساً برداء صدق لنيه

And I melt if the camel-driver sings to me of you,

And I melt if the announcer sings to me about you

Draped in a mantle of sincerity, with intent.

Wearing the gown of sincere intention

أواه من حر البعاد فإنه

أواه من حر البعاد فإنه

يضني الفؤاد وليس يبصر زيه

يضني الفؤاد وليس يبصر زيه

Ah, the heat of separation! For it

Oh the pain of remoteness, for it

Wastes the heart, though its guise is unseen.

Aggrieves the heart, and does not see its form

وحياتكم يا من أهيم لأجلكم

وحياتكم يا من أهيم لأجلكم

ها ذات قلبي عندكم مرميه

ها ذات قلبي عندكم مرميه

And by your lives, O you for whose sake I wander in love,

And your life, O you whom I passionately desire

Behold, my heart's very essence lies cast before you.

Pouring its tears and anguish

صبٌّ تصب دموعه وولوعه

صبٌّ تصب دموعه وولوعه

من كل فنٍّ ناره مصليه

من كل فنٍّ ناره مصليه

A lovesick man: his tears and ardor pour forth;

With every kind of fire ritualized

In every form, its fire scorches.

Passions stirred in it for the burnt ones

هاجت به للأجرعين مآربٌ

هاجت به للأجرعين مآربٌ

تركته والآلام فيه عصيه

تركته والآلام فيه عصيه

Longings for al-Ajraʿayn stirred within him,

It left it while the pain therein is tenacious

Leaving him with pains within him that would not yield.

It did not set out to express a homesickness by which

ما راح ينشر لوعةً يبغي بها

ما راح ينشر لوعةً يبغي بها

وصلاً ولم ترجع به مطويه

وصلاً ولم ترجع به مطويه

He never unfolds anguish, seeking through it

It seeks reunion but did not return folded

Union, without its returning with him folded away.

Be kind to it with a look that gives it life from

حنوا عليه بنظرةٍ تحييه من

حنوا عليه بنظرةٍ تحييه من

موت البعاد إذا البعاد بليه

موت البعاد إذا البعاد بليه

Show him tenderness with a glance that revives him from

The death of remoteness when remoteness is corruptive

The death of separation, when separation is an affliction.

How many times did I visualize you while I

كم مرةٍ حاضرتكم وأنا الذي

كم مرةٍ حاضرتكم وأنا الذي

فيكم قباب تولهي مبنيه

فيكم قباب تولهي مبنيه

How often have I kept your company—I whose

In you domes that entrance me are built

Domes of rapture are built in you.

And versified you in my mind as if I

ونظمتكم في خاطري وكأنني

ونظمتكم في خاطري وكأنني

في رضوةٍ قدسيةٍ عطريه

في رضوةٍ قدسيةٍ عطريه

And I arrayed you in my thoughts, as though I were

Were in a sacred, fragrant garden

In a sacred, fragrant garden [reading uncertain].

And glimpsed you with my inner sight as if it

ورمقتكم ببصيرتي وكأنها

ورمقتكم ببصيرتي وكأنها

تلك الوجوه بباصري مرثيه

تلك الوجوه بباصري مرثيه

And I gazed at you with my inner sight, as though

Depicts those faces buried in my vision

Those faces were mourned in my gaze.

For your beauty a dwelling in the folds of my heart

لجمالكم في طي قلبي موطن

لجمالكم في طي قلبي موطن

وعليه كسوة أنةٍ طينيه

وعليه كسوة أنةٍ طينيه

Your beauty has a dwelling in the folds of my heart,

And over it a robe of blissful clay

And over it lies a garment of an earthen groan.

My love for you was molded in the form of my essence

جبلت محبتكم بنوع حقيقتي

جبلت محبتكم بنوع حقيقتي

مع قالبي من قبل أنشر طيه

مع قالبي من قبل أنشر طيه

Love for you was molded into the nature of my essence,

With my constitution since before its folds were spread

Along with my bodily mold, before I unfolded its folds.

And your secrets took hold in my mind

وتحكمت في مهجتي أسراركم

وتحكمت في مهجتي أسراركم

هي والهوى مرثيةٌ مخفيه

هي والهوى مرثيةٌ مخفيه

And your secrets took command of my heart's core;

It and passion a hidden elegy

They and love are a hidden elegy.

Far be it from you to sever my rope when

حاشاكمو أن تقطعوا حبلي وقد

حاشاكمو أن تقطعوا حبلي وقد

جبلت هواكم طيتي النوعيه

جبلت هواكم طيتي النوعيه

Far be it from you to sever my cord, when indeed

I was created loving your noble nature

My essential disposition has fashioned love for you.

I was absent from all but you, professing

قد غبت فيكم عن سواكم آخذاً

قد غبت فيكم عن سواكم آخذاً

دين الهوى وفصوله الكليه

دين الهوى وفصوله الكليه

I have vanished in you, oblivious to all but you, embracing

The religion of passion and its total principles

The faith of love and its universal chapters,

Realized through my love for your excellence

متحققاً بمحبتي لجنابكم

متحققاً بمحبتي لجنابكم

والحب رنة سره أصليه

والحب رنة سره أصليه

Fully realized in my love for your august presence;

And love is the echo whose secret is intrinsic

And the resonance of love's secret is innate.

Favor me with the breath of spirit that

منوا عليَّ بنفخة الروح التي

منوا عليَّ بنفخة الروح التي

تحيي الرميم فهذه الأمنيه

تحيي الرميم فهذه الأمنيه

Favor me with a breath of the spirit, which

Gives life to the feeble, for this is my wish

Revives decayed remains—for this is my wish.
