    فأَنسَتْني الأَكوانَ لمَّا تبدَّتِ

    The horizon's crescent showed me a gleam of your intimacy;

so it made me forget the worlds when it appeared.

And my spirit flew toward it, and through its secret was shattered

my Sinai, by the mystery, after my last remnant was lost.

And before my eye there shone, from the meanings of your workings,

subtle traces; my eye grew glad and found repose.

So here I am, that love-bewildered one for whom there shone

the universe, since those suns revealed themselves.

Gently, O lightning of the East; be still, for I

was wrung at heart when you were twisted; so hold steady.

Indeed, by the workings emerging from the cloud,

and the decrees of revelation that descended to the heart,

when Najd's lightning sparkles, I am borne away

by my heart, from al-Dahna to the land of Medina.

It has desires in the deserts of the Hijaz,

which sincerity of inward intent has hidden from the worlds.

My patience demands stillness of me, though it—

my anguish—has engulfed that patience, which is already spent.

So I am drawn from myself by intimations of love for those

to whom the mysteries made pilgrimage from the caravan of my aspiration.

And they turn me away from everything except love,

so my patience departs when my return is assured.

O beloveds of my heart, love has never ceased

to fulfill my hopes through you, O my beloveds.

By the sanctity of affection whose secret was hidden in the spirit,

and the forms of ecstasy for you that have settled in me,

and by my burning heart, and the coolness of what

you spread for us from the fragrance of that turning glance,

give our passion its due weight, with compassion,

when the men of love are called to account concerning you.

And do not sever from us the cords of your tenderness,

for your lovers die at the mention of estrangement.

And favor us with your care, for we

    are weak—oh, the mighty visitations!

Threat and promise—so have mercy on us and deal

with tenderness and favor between these two, in the way that...
