أَهلاًwelcome بيوسُفِto Joseph وقتٍof an age سرَّgladdened يعْقوبيmy Jacob
أَهلاً بيوسُفِ وقتٍ سرَّ يعْقوبي
The bearer of glad tidings came to my Jacob with his Joseph.
The herald came to Jacob with the news of Joseph
Welcome to a Joseph of the age who gladdened my Jacob.
Welcome Joseph at the time Jacob was delighted

فقُمْتُ مُبْتهِجاً في طَوْرِ مجْذوبِ
A summons rang out for him along the path of hearing.
A caller rang in the path of hearing
So I rose rejoicing, in the state of one drawn into ecstasy.
So I got up rejoicing in an ecstatic state
أَرتاحُI rejoice هذاthis قَميصُthe shirt of الوعدِpromise مسَّtouched بهwith it

على عُيونِ فُؤادي كفُّ مَحْبوبي
I rejoice: this is the shirt of promise, with which
This is the shirt of promise that touched me
my beloved's palm touched the eyes of my heart.
On the eyes of my heart like the hand of my beloved

I saw after an obscuration I had borne,
I saw after blindness that I was carrying
and my drink from the cups of nearness became pleasing to me.
And the drink from the cups of nearness was pleasing to me

and I came to read him in everything written.
And I started reading Him in everything written

والمحوُ يُبرِزُ عندي حالَ مسْلوبِ
Sobriety establishes for me a state that steadies me,
And wakefulness confirms a state for me that stabilizes me
and effacement reveals in me the state of one dispossessed.
While annihilation brings out in me a stripped state

After witnessing the beauty of his countenance, I no longer feared
I did not fear, after witnessing His beautiful rising
my state's fluctuations between dismissal and appointment.
The changing of my state with isolation and conjunction

If it holds true for me, though the world's affairs lie idle,
If my affairs are sound and the affairs of the universe are invalid
then there is no harm—by my life, that is what I seek.
Then by my life, that is my sought one

وذيلُهُ ساقِطٌ في شكلِ مسْحوبِ
I rise while night's realms are shrouded in darkness,
I stand while the night is pitch black in its worlds
and its hem hangs down like a trailing train.
And its tail is falling in a pulled form

وأَستعيدُ صِراخاً شأْنَ مرْغوبِ
I moan the moan of the camp's bereaved mother, stricken with loss,
Do I moan the bereavement of the Living having lost Him
and repeat a cry on account of the one desired.
And I regain crying like one infatuated?

And I sway the boughs of the ban tree; intent
And I entice the branches of intimation dwelling
upon me, their birds listen to my love-song.
Upon me are its birds listening to my youthful folly

My warrant, while the people return in a caravan
My argument and the locking of the people's hearts
with every good, is my journey toward the one I desire.
To every good - my journey is toward my wish

It is as though, when their led mounts are turned about,
As if there will be a day when their sides are folded
their saddles laden with gains not plundered,
Like well-loaded mounts with no loss

I fly in ecstasy, though in my soul there is a heavy burden.
I fly with ecstasy while there is heaviness in my soul
How often I told it: O my reproaching soul, repent!
So many times I said: O my blamer, repent!

And dancers upon my two ribs said: Awake!
Dancing women said to me: Be aware!
What is the matter with a volunteer who strives like one mourned?
What is the matter with you wailing like one commissioned?

This happiness has come to you, sweeping along
This happiness has come to you in floods
in her mantle, within the pitched pavilion of bounty.
With its coolness mixed in the drink of the gift being poured

And the heights addressed you through it, saying:
The Sublime spoke to you saying:
Rise! You, O son of God's Messenger, are the one I seek.
Arise, O son of the Messenger of God, my chosen one

وجُلْ بِبيدِ التَّدلِّي خيرَ مَصْحوبي
So gather the scattered affairs whose master you are,
So gather the disparate affairs that you take charge of
and roam the deserts of descent, best of my companions.
And come with the gentle hand of one who guides to good, my companion

Then I drew near the stage of address, having
I drew near at that time to the station of speech and I
woven a graceful style into my reply.
Incorporated excellent diction in my answer

And a gathering of ecstatic utterances appeared to me; I almost took it
And the sum of my pretentiousness that I almost witnessed
for the station of my rank—delusions of one overcome.
The position of my status or the imaginations of the overwhelmed appeared to me

I rose from my state of presence, with intimacy gathering me together,
And I stood up from my presence, and intimacy gathered me
God's Messenger having undertaken my discipline.
And the Messenger of Allah took charge of my education

بالنَّصِّ ل بِمعاني فَهْمِ مَوْهوبِ
I made my jurisprudence judge the illuminations of my inward visitation,
I controlled my jurisprudence with the illuminations that came to me
by the scriptural text, not by the meanings of gifted understanding.
With the text, not with the meanings of gifted understanding

And every visitor of inspiration that came upon me,
And every comer of inspiration that descends upon me
I bound by an analogy that was not false.
I restricted him with analogical reasoning that is not unfounded

I said: O my pride, be cut off through humility,
And I said: O my lowliness, withdraw!
and O attachments of my soul, melt away this once.
And o attachments of my soul, dissolve!

Then guidance from al-Zahra's father led me
So the market of guidance from my father al-Zahraa' drove me
to Iraq, and a breath of perfume wafted forth.
To Iraq, and the scent of perfume wafted

I was told: Take the hand of the shaykh of the God-fearing;
And it was said to me: Take the hand of the Sheikh of the reverent
that is the noblest thing earned and bestowed.
For that is the most noble gain and gift

So I came, and the white brilliance preceded me
wherever I went—and this is my Job's recovery.
Wherever I went, and this is the clearing of my epidemic

I leaned towards Damascus and connected with it
having stood in those prayer niches.
And I stood by those sanctuaries

Then I traveled the uplands until Basra became clear
And afterwards, Basra became clear to me
after obscurity, while the fire of ecstasy rose within me.
After the ambiguity, and the fire of ecstasy rises with me

I visited the station, and Abraham, and my essence
my own self chose a place of prayer there, after my exile.
Took it as a place of prayer after my estrangement

I placed a hand in a hand with indication beyond
a command; my refinement rested on the pledge of divine good pleasure.
A matter based on the pledge of acceptance and my education

And my sheikh was the greatest of the pillars
and among those of knowledge, peerless as a hive's chief.
And the foremost of scholars, like the little nightingale

The command of the heavens - I want the nearness of the observed

From that grave revived my dead attributed one

From al-Husayn the unique pearl was selected whose orphan girl

We sought refuge in a holy court beside his resting place,
We took pleasure in the collected works of sanctity at his tomb
erected and draped with the gauzy veils of bounty.
Suspended with gifts of gifting, consecrated

We had crossed the desert toward him, seeking bounty,
And we knocked on the desert for him in health
hurrying in ecstasy, tearing our cloaks.
Picking ecstasy by tearing our robes

Alive with a light poured upon the horizons

From a sprinkling by the imam Ibn al-Rifa'i, they recounted,
When it was sated with all types of wonders
once they had drunk their fill, every kind of marvel.
This is the one who knocked down the pillar of ecstasy the day it swayed
هذاthis الذيis he who هدَّdemolished رُكْنَthe pillar of الشَّطْحِecstatic utterance يومَon the day زَهاhe gloried

This is he who demolished the pillar of ecstatic utterance when he gloried
With the robe of opening, but the swaying of the sought
in the robe of opening, yet with the glory of one sought.
This is the one who shook the sword of determination, volunteering
