أبَدْرَ الحَيِّ غَلْغَلْتَ السِّتارَه

أبَدْرَ الحَيِّ غَلْغَلْتَ السِّتارَه

فَصَرِّحْ للأحِبَّةِ بالإشارَه

فَصَرِّحْ للأحِبَّةِ بالإشارَه

O moon of the quarter, you have passed through the veil.

So make the sign plain to the beloved ones.

وطُلَّ على عُيونٍ قدْ تَعامَتْ

وطُلَّ على عُيونٍ قدْ تَعامَتْ

عن الأغيارِ تَرْتَقِبُ البِشارَه

عن الأغيارِ تَرْتَقِبُ البِشارَه

And appear before eyes that have made themselves blind

to all others, awaiting the good news.

يقولُ العاشِقونَ عشِقْتَ بدراً

يقولُ العاشِقونَ عشِقْتَ بدراً

وقد صيَّرْتَ منكَ القلبَ دارَهْ

وقد صيَّرْتَ منكَ القلبَ دارَهْ

The lovers say, “You have loved a full moon,”

“and you have made your heart its dwelling.”

فقلتُ لهم نعم وسكَتُّ عنهم

فقلتُ لهم نعم وسكَتُّ عنهم

ورُبَّ عجائِبٍ هي في عِبارَهْ

ورُبَّ عجائِبٍ هي في عِبارَهْ

I said yes to them, then fell silent;

how many wonders can lie within a phrase.

رَعاهُ اللهُ من بدرٍ مُنيرٍ

رَعاهُ اللهُ من بدرٍ مُنيرٍ

بَهيجٍ شبَّ في ضِلْعي نَارَهْ

بَهيجٍ شبَّ في ضِلْعي نَارَهْ

May God protect that shining full moon,

radiant, which kindled a fire in my ribs.

رفعْتُ لبرْجِهِ شُرُفاتِ قلبي

رفعْتُ لبرْجِهِ شُرُفاتِ قلبي

فصار لكلِّ دارَتِهِ سِرَارَهْ

فصار لكلِّ دارَتِهِ سِرَارَهْ

I raised the battlements of my heart toward its tower,

and every circuit of its orbit held an inner secret.

لقد عَجِبَ الحَواسِدُ إذْ تجلَّى

لقد عَجِبَ الحَواسِدُ إذْ تجلَّى

بسِرِّي والحواسِدُ في خَسَارَهْ

بسِرِّي والحواسِدُ في خَسَارَهْ

The envious were amazed when it appeared

within my secret, while they were left in loss.

أيعْجَبُ عاقِلٌ والقلبُ عرْشٌ

أيعْجَبُ عاقِلٌ والقلبُ عرْشٌ

وهذا الماءُ ينْبَعُ من حِجَارَهْ

وهذا الماءُ ينْبَعُ من حِجَارَهْ

Would a wise person marvel, when the heart is a throne

and this water springs from stone?

فبِئْسَ تِجارَةُ الأَقوامِ جُحْداً

فبِئْسَ تِجارَةُ الأَقوامِ جُحْداً

وَنَّ تِجارَتي نِعم التِّجارَهْ

وَنَّ تِجارَتي نِعم التِّجارَهْ

What a wretched trade the people make in denial;

my trade, indeed, is an excellent trade.

أَأَنْسَ يومَ لأْلأَ في ضَميري

أَأَنْسَ يومَ لأْلأَ في ضَميري

ومنشورُ الرَّبيعِ له نَضارَهْ

ومنشورُ الرَّبيعِ له نَضارَهْ

Could I forget the day it glittered in my innermost being,

while spring’s unfolding had its freshness?

وخاطَبَني بقلبي وهو رُوحي

وخاطَبَني بقلبي وهو رُوحي

وأَطْلَعَ في سَمَواتي مَنارَهْ

وأَطْلَعَ في سَمَواتي مَنارَهْ

It spoke to me through my heart, and it is my soul,

and raised a beacon in my heavens.

فذُبْتُ وقامَ بي وعَجِبْتُ منِّي

فذُبْتُ وقامَ بي وعَجِبْتُ منِّي

كسَبْتُ العزَّ في طورِ الحَقارَهْ

كسَبْتُ العزَّ في طورِ الحَقارَهْ

I melted; it rose within me, and I marveled at myself:

I gained honor in a state of lowliness.

وظاهَرَني وجلْبَبَني جَلالاً

وظاهَرَني وجلْبَبَني جَلالاً

وأكْسَبني من العلمِ الأَثارَهْ

وأكْسَبني من العلمِ الأَثارَهْ

It supported me and clothed me in majesty,

and granted me a trace of knowledge.

فسِرْتُ له على قدَمٍ رَفيعٍ

فسِرْتُ له على قدَمٍ رَفيعٍ

وما لَحِقَ العِدى منِّي غَبارَهْ

وما لَحِقَ العِدى منِّي غَبارَهْ

So I walked toward it with an elevated step,

and my enemies could not catch even my dust.

وغارَ عليَّ إحْساناً ولُطْفاً

وغارَ عليَّ إحْساناً ولُطْفاً

وشنَّ على ذَوي الأَحْقادِ غارَهْ

وشنَّ على ذَوي الأَحْقادِ غارَهْ

It guarded me with kindness and gentleness

and launched an assault on those who harbor grudges.

فقلتُ لرُوحي ابْتَهِجي وطِيبي

فقلتُ لرُوحي ابْتَهِجي وطِيبي

لقد كَشَفَ الحَبيبُ لكِ السِّتارَهْ

لقد كَشَفَ الحَبيبُ لكِ السِّتارَهْ

I said to my soul, “Rejoice and be at peace:

the beloved has lifted the veil for you.”

وأُسْدِلَ من سِتارَتِهِ سُتورٌ

وأُسْدِلَ من سِتارَتِهِ سُتورٌ

وحُقِّقتِ الأِشارَةُ والبِشارَهْ

وحُقِّقتِ الأِشارَةُ والبِشارَهْ

And curtains were drawn from its veil,

and the sign and the good news came true.
