    O lightning-flash that has curled,

whenever you curl, we are startled.

In our innermost depths there flares,

if you do not appear, a ray.

O lightning, the beloveds of my heart

have laid my heart waste through abandonment.

Tears have flowed from me in succession,

and talk of cutting me off is what I hear.

And the decree of those I love,

O lightning, is a decree obeyed.

I made known the flood of my eyes

to them; they made known their abandonment of me.

    يا لَيْتَهُمْ ليَ راعوا

    And distance has stirred my dread;

oh, if only they had shown me care!

    Love—alas for my heart!—leaves

    an imprint upon our natures.

I bade my soul farewell in annihilation,

since it was said, “The hour of farewell has come.”

And they have toyed with my heart—

    alas!—those hills.

And the surge from the sea of my eyelid

    never ceases, my friend.

    no sail has enfolded them.

And with lamentation I am forever locked

    in battles and struggle.

From my soul's exertion is filled

a measure, and a measure is emptied.

And from the sighing of my moans

comes music for lovers to hear.

As though I were a sheet of parchment,

on which the reed pen has dried.

And, O wonder, my beloved has

    insight into my affairs.

    and men have possessions.

while others' concern is landed estates.

    My understanding is love's chain of transmission;

what is heard from it is proven sound.

And what is possible in ecstasy within it

is, within it, impossible for others.

    A negation among propositions,

from which the single become pairs,

    concealed beneath my heart,

like fire that cannot be endured.
