When Adam was not yet a slab of clay.

And my art in existence is love of him,

Even if people are absorbed in the arts.

O master whose lights have sparkled,

    Shining in the secure city.

By your cord stretched from the throne on high,

By your secret transmitted from Gabriel,

By every leader whose unseen leader you are,

And your symbol encoded within the letter Sin,

By your inhabited house in the heights of the unseen,

And your sea set ablaze in Ta-Sin,

By your eye, whose light reached its utmost,

In the scene of manifestation and creation,

By your heart, brimming with every wave,

By the sun of your trusted face's radiance,

Gentle one, soothe me with the beloved.

Toward the passes of al-Liwa, take me along.

And O gentle wafts of breeze before dawn,

Awaken me from the drowse of bewilderment.

And you, O my soul, journey toward them,

And bid me farewell now, or leave me.

And O concerns of events apart from them,

Pass at a distance, and keep me far away.

Do not occupy me with anything but their tidings,

And do not sully my certainty with anything else.

And O forms of my unrest in yearning for them,

Turn me over upon the blaze of passionate love.

And whenever I find rest from my yearning,

By God, kindle the fire and make me restless.

And O my little red tear from my eye,

Wound me upon the cheeks of yearning.

And O little melodies of Bilal in the night's darkness,

As the caravan travels, bewilder me.

I have been made light—alas, my fire!—by deadly longing,

Though I was like a towering, steadfast mountain.

My weakness is plain, and my suffering manifest,

And you, O soul of creation, are my helper.
