إذاif أَنْتَyou حدَّقْتَyou focus البَصيرَةَinner vision والبَصَرْand sight
إذا أَنْتَ حدَّقْتَ البَصيرَةَ والبَصَرْ
رأيتَyou will see نِظامَthe order of الأَمرِthings يفعَلُacts بالبَشَرْupon humankind
رأيتَ نِظامَ الأَمرِ يفعَلُ بالبَشَرْ
If you focus your inner vision and your sight,
You will see the order of things acting upon humankind.
لهit has نكتَةٌa subtle point يَحْتاطُencompasses بالعبْدِaround the servant سِرُّهاits secret
له نكتَةٌ يَحْتاطُ بالعبْدِ سِرُّها
إذاwhen غابَhe is absent فيin تلكَthose المَعارِجِascents أوor حَضَرْhe is present
إذا غابَ في تلكَ المَعارِجِ أو حَضَرْ
It holds a subtle truth whose secret encompasses the servant,
Whether he is absent in those ascents or present.
كفَىsuffices بوَفيدِwith the messenger of الموتِdeath للمرءِfor a man واعِظاًas an admonisher
كفَى بوَفيدِ الموتِ للمرءِ واعِظاً
وقدْand indeed قالَهاhe said it الهاديthe Guide لصاحِبِهِto his companion عُمَرْUmar
وقدْ قالَها الهادي لصاحِبِهِ عُمَرْ
Death’s messenger suffices as an admonisher for a man,
And indeed, the Guide said this to his companion Umar.
